Q: Does this have a battery back up so that short power outages do not confuse it?

They weld the battery in so you can't change it so you hopefully buy more but that actually hurts sales. I use a solder gun and remove the battery holder and replace with one I can change the batteries with. I won't let them get me that easy haha

Q: What are the differences between blue one and this upgraded version?

The upgraded version : 19 Programmable Settings , 7-Day Cycle, Larger Screen. Easier operation for second function.I bought the ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0752PHMTL ) a month ago, i was told Nearpow had post their upgraded edition so i bought again.After all timers can be used everywhere in my house.As you can see, i am super satisfied with this new edition. Operation is clear and easy (not difficult),colorful functions.Great choice

Q: Can this be used to cook with a crock pot?

Not sure where you got 800 watts.... the back of mine says 15 amps at 125v. 125X15=1875 watts. To be on the safe side I wouldn't use it on anything that draws more than 110*15=1650 watts.

Yes of course.Mine works well in duration of minutes and seconds.Some complain about the seconds function for there is no "second" button, but as i know we still are able to use the "Minutes & seconds" instead of only "Hour & Minutes".Here is the OPERATION: Press the SWITCH button --->Press and Hold the TIMING CYCLE button for 3 seconds,and the top set of numbers will flash (transformed to Minutes & Seconds Mode).Then the two parts of number (Hours & Minutes) represents (Minutes & Seconds).For Example, first Press the SWITCH button, then Press and hold the TIMING CYCLE button for 3 seconds, when the numbers flash, then Press the Hour button to adjust the number to 1,press the Minute button to adjust the number to 30.Other operation just the same.Job done.These are the steps for setting Minutes and Seconds cycling, hope it helps.
