Pocket or hand penetrometer is widely used to check consistency and quickly estimate compression strength in the field, but should not be used as a substitute for laboratory testing or extensive field analysis. In addition, the hand penetrometer can accurately indicate the consistency of undistorted clumping soil core samples and approximate unlimited compression strength. 1/4" diameter loading pistons are pushed into the surface of the soil until the engraved mark is flush with the soil. Compression loads are indicated by reading the scale on the piston barrel, and friction rings indicate maximum reading value.
