Review: Excellent - I got this book last minute for a trip to Slovenia where we planned to hike in the Julian Alps most of the time and spend a short amount of time in Croatia in transit to SLO. However, the weather turned bad so we had to cancel the Croatia leg and the hike in Slo. This book helped salvage the trip and included helpful (and we found accurate) assessments of sights to see to make the most of our time. Also included is a summary and background of the politics and conflicts that have shaped this part of Europe which was very helpful and interesting in understanding local sentiments, though most of those we interacted with were not of an age to have lived through any of it. I assume the Croatia content is as good as the SLO. Highly recommend! Review: Wow. Everything you need for a month in the Balkans - My previous reviews have praised the Rick Steves series, and this one is no different. In preparation for our trip, I bought this and the Lonely Planet guides. With the exception of a few different restaurants, they provide the same information. The difference is there's more of it in this book. Walking tours, transportation suggestions, guide tips, more info on side trips from the major cities are all valuable features. A worthwhile investment. On a related note, using this book, I finally took the plunge and started consulting his website. The travel forums have also provided good help with planning our upcoming trip.

Outstanding info - helped with self guided tours
Rick Steves is the best. I traveled these areas on a organized tour but had free time to explore with some of the others on the tour. The information was excellent and very helpful. Would recommend Steves' travel books

Better to Buy Later Edition and Additional Maps
I found the book helpful in many ways but not perfect. Rick's books give you all kinds of interesting background information about the history and culture of the places you visit. They are also useful for exploring different transportation options. For example, I learned about the ride share option GoOpti from the book and I used it successfully. Rick's books are opinionated about what's worth seeing and what to skip-- I don't always agree with these opinions but if you know what you like you can weigh your options and make an informed decision . The maps in his books are often not detailed enough to actually get you exactly where you want to go. Buy a little popup map or pick up a free one at the local tourist information office that is more detailed. This edition has some out of date info in it. For example, his description of Vintgar Gorge at Lake Bled did not describe the new hiking route that has been changed since Covid.

Great resource.
I ordered this book to use when traveling around Croatia. The author had some helpful tips about traveling from the airport to our destination. The maps and highlights of various cities was also a great asset.

Very informative as always
I used this book to decide where to take a vacation. It was very helpful in defining what is and what isn’t available, costs, transportation needs etc very typical of Steve’s’ books

Very comprehensive and thorough travel book.
In our past travels we have used The Lonely Planet however. I have been finding recently that for European travel that the Lonely Planet often is scarce on budget to medium cost accommodation . We don’t stay in high end accommodation so must look elsewhere which is where Rick Steve’s travel guides show their strength. His accommodation and restaurant recommendations are in the range we use. Also the Lonely Planet often doesn’t even cover certain areas in countries. Mostly covers a tourist trail they recommend which isn’t bad but again Rick Steve’s gives much more detail and really is comprehensive in the countries he covers in his travel guide. I am not saying the Lonely Planet isn’t a good travel guide however for European travel Rick Steve’s guides just work better for my wife and I for our style of travel. If you are traveling outside of Europe then you will not find Rick Steve’s guides. I am really impressed with his writing style and thorough & detailed coverage. You won’t find a lot of glossy coloured pictures but you will find quality maps, guides and instructions that will make your trip well organized and easier.

Best advice for travelers to Croatia
Loved this travel book and worth every penny. The history of Croatia is explained. The cities are described and the tours from the cities are described well. The maps are easy to,read. Food is covered, and suggestions are given for best places to eat. Customs of the people are mentioned. The pages of the book are thin so the book weighs very little. Rick Steves suggests that the book be torn apart and pages for that part of the trip be used. (I don’t plan on doing that) Slovenia is covered as well but I haven’t read that yet. Transportation and driving are covered. Keep on travelin’, as Rick Steves says

Useful and comprehensive guide but beware of specific recommendations
Yet another invaluable guide from Rick Steves and his hard-working team. On a recent trip to Croatia, our group found the information provided to be both useful and accurate. There is one thing to beware of, however: when Steves picks out a particular accommodation or restaurant, that place will often have become extremely popular. Restos that he recommends may be hard to get into. Worse, they may have become careless and complacent because of heavy demand. A meal at a Steves-recommended resto in Zagreb was one of the worst experiences of our entire trip! So rely on the general information but be careful of specifics!
