They are supportive but not too hard and they have different cushioning thicknesses depending on the shoe type. I use these in sneakers and the thick cushioned ones in hiking boots. For my foot's long arch I have to buy a few sizes bigger than my shoe size, and then cut them down. For my first pair, I tried the oven option to mold them. But for subsequent pairs I found that just putting them right into my shoe was good enough and it would mold to my feet over time.I would recommend trying these in a local store first if you have that option. Many running stores and a certain outdoor store chain usually have them with trial stations set up for you to find your fit. Buying your shoe size might not give you the arch support you need, but you won't know that until you try them out.
