Review: Ideal for Carpet Fitting – Strong, Compact, and Easy to Spot - I recently used the STANLEY FATMAX Retractable Folding Utility Knife to fit a new carpet, and I couldn’t be more pleased with its performance. This knife is incredibly sturdy, made from metal, which gives it a solid, durable feel in hand. It cut through thick carpet with ease. You can tell it's built to last and handle demanding jobs. One of my favorite features is that it folds up into a compact size, making it easy to carry around in my pocket. The folding mechanism works smoothly, and once closed, it’s safe and secure. The retractable blade adds an extra layer of safety, and the built-in blade storage in the handle is super convenient, especially when you need to switch blades quickly on the job. Another bonus is the bright yellow design – it makes it easy to spot in a busy workspace, so you’re not constantly hunting around for your knife. This is such a simple but thoughtful touch, and it’s been a real time-saver for me. If you’re looking for a strong, reliable, and compact utility knife, this one is fantastic. Whether you’re fitting carpets like I did or tackling other heavy-duty tasks, the STANLEY FATMAX won’t disappoint. It’s become a go-to tool in my kit, and I highly recommend it!
Review: First impressions are that it’s a very good, easy to use product - I bought this knife to try out and to compare with the ubiquitous 99E I have been using for years. First impressions are that it’s a very good, easy to use product. Had some trouble getting the packaging card off as it was weaved inside the workings, but there is a narrow, perforated section on it hiding just inside where it comes out the slider adjust slot; tear it there then pull the packaging out the rest of the knife and you’re good to go. It has the familiar locking slider for extending and retracting the blade. The real advantage with this knife is the ability to swap the blade round and even to replace it without having to unscrew and dismantle the knife body. Pressing the small red button just behind the blade slot releases the blade so it can be pulled out the slot. Refitting a blade can be a bit fiddly though, the red button has to be pressed again to re insert a blade. Beneath the rubberized lid there is a clasp that can hold 3 extra blades, the lid hinges open via a small red plastic catch underneath. The whole knife can be folded closed to reduce its footprint by squeezing a metal catch against the inner wall of the handle then hinging it closed. One criticism I have is there is no hole to thread a lanyard through at the end, but it does come with a pocket clip on the handle. I mainly use a “Stanley Knife” for preparing cable terminations, especially SWA cables for new installs. Using this knife for a couple of days has convinced me this is an ideal tool for the job, being slightly less heavy, easily as strong as the 99E and unlikely to break or fail anytime soon.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: How do you remove the packaging?**
A: Whoever designed the packaging should be shot - I had to dismantle the knife. Fortunately, I have an iFixit toolkit with what I needed: a pair of scissors, a T10 hex screwdriver (bit) and a pair of tweezers. No major force should be applied during this process - if you're doing it right, gently does the trick.1) With the scissors, I removed the knife from the cardboard mount by cutting in two places: a) where the blade comes out, and b) above the metal tab that slides the blade back and forth.2) Using the hex screwdriver, I removed the central 'axle' that holds the two halves together. This comes out in two pieces, one on each side.3) By spreading the halves of the yellow handle a little bit, I was able to (gently) separate the front grey half of the knife. Careful at this point because a) you can't see this but the knife rotates by a part of the yellow handle sliding in a groove in the front half, and b) there's a loose washer that will fall out and you don't want to lose that.4) Once the two halves were separated, I found that I could pull the remaining cardboard out of the front half using the tweezers because the gap in which in was sitting could widen a bit.5) Reassemble, ensuring the washer is sitting in the circular groove.6) Press the red tab on the underside of the yellow handle to release the black palm rest. You'll be able to see the blades inside the clear plastic7) Using the tweezers, lift up an edge of the plastic film a little (it's surprisingly thick and well stuck on). Then use the scissors to make a small initial cut in the edge of the film, then pull the film off gradually with the tweezers. Once the film is off, you can slide out one of the blades8) To insert a blade, make sure the sliding metal tab on the top of the knife is pushed to the front of its range. While pressing the red button on the side, gently slide in the blade all the way in. Release the red button and give the blade a wiggle (in and out) to ensure it's fitted correctlyOh and to fold the knife, there's a metal lever on the inside of the handle that you depress from underneath to allow the front half to rotate.I'm sure others had more luck removing the cardboard from inside the knife straight away but I found it depends on how it creases as you're trying to pull it out. In any case, fire the person who designed it.

**Q: Silly question - once opened, how do you close it, I cant see a release catch / button, thanks in advance :)**
A: Look underneath where the body folds back in, there's a metal lever which locks the knife open. Press it and fold the knife at the same time. Easy to do one handed when you're used to it!

**Q: jhow does the handle fold up again on the stanley fatmax utllity knife**
A: It folds in the same way that it opens. To open it fully, there is a spring clip inside the slot where the folded knife fits. When you open the knife as far as it will go you'll see the spring clip inside the slot. Press it towards the side of the slot and at the same time pull the knife to open it up. Closing the knife into it's slot works the same way in reverse. Just press the metal spring clip and keep pressing while you push the knife section back into its slot.

**Q: Does this come with blade**
A: Yes they are tucked inside. It took me ages to get it open but if you look at the side inside you will find the blades tucked away. Although I did send this back because it was useless and we used a pair of scissors instead

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very compact

Nice little Stanley knife bought to replace my vintage knife of 40 years. Stanley are a good brand as my last knife is testament to that fact. Although it still works it now belongs in a museum. Let's hope this posh new folding knife lives up to the Stanley reputation. Folds to half the size and does hold a few spare blades which are easy to replace. It's light and good value for the price. Even used it to cut new fire bricks for the wood burner so quite tough too. Remember buy cheap buy twice. Also go with a traditional make you get what you pay for.
