I have four chicks. OMG, so cute, but so very messy with dirty bedding in their water font. I desperately needed a clean water solution for them. This poultry water nipple is a great solution. At two weeks old, my chicks easily learned to use this. I just stuffed their favorite snacks (rolled oatmeal and mealworms) into the tiny, red reservoir. They got so excited about the water coming out. In fact, they seem to consider it a special treat when I reach in and get them a couple of drops of water even now after they know how to use it.I did need a couple of tries to get this to work on various jugs here without leaking. Honestly, even the bit of leaking I got on my first couple of tries was still less mess than an open drinking container. These seem to be designed for use on pvc or on a heavy, five gallon bucket. I need smaller size container for my smaller sized coop/run and small number of chickens. a five gallon bucket would take way too much room. My first try on a milk jug was very leaky. The plastic is just so thin and pliable that it didn't drill well. A gallon sized vinegar jug with a dab of silicone was much more successful but still ended up leaking eventually. My chickens picked at the shiny silicone. Most successful by far is a gallon-sized, eco friendly liquid laundry detergent bottle, thoroughly rinsed, because the plastic is much heavier. I added a little JB Quik Weld, which is an epoxy adhesive often used in plumbing with a four hour cure time, to make sure the nipple remains secure. I won't be able to reuse this nipple after the JB Weld, but I have four spares ready to go! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great Product *by ★***★ on November 8, 2018* Ive been using these for a while now and they are great. The girls love them and they have withstood about 8 months of constant use (2 chickens per nipple) with nothing more than a spray cleaning when I clean out the waterer. I do wish they let out a little more water with use, but I think this keeps the surrounding area drier and gives the girls something to work at. I have had no leak issues. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Our Chicks Love These (...and so do I!) *by M***F on September 27, 2020* So far so good!! I will update this as time goes on, but here’s the process I have followed so far:I used a standard 5/16 bit, but did need to wallow it out a very tiny bit to get the nipple started. I installed three of the nipples on a 5 gallon bucket with a lid and let water sit in it for a couple of days to ensure there were no leaks before transitioning my chicks over to them. I did not use any type of waterproofing or silicone. There were no leaks, so I started the process of transitioning the chicks over to their new watering source.Before moving them to the coop, they spent several full days outside (then were returned to the brooder overnight). I removed their chick waterer and placed the five gallon bucket half full on a couple of wood slices. I showed two of our 16 chicks how to use it, and repeated the motions a few times for other chicks by pressing the metal pieces in with my finger. In around 15 minutes, two of the chicks (not the ones I had shown the process to) were curious enough to peck the metal pieces and quickly understood that it gave them water.Within two hours, all 16 chicks had caught on and were using it regularly.Once we moved them to the coop, I placed the bucket on a cinder block until they are big enough for the stand I put together. Keep in mind that the nipples should be about 1 1/2 inches above the bottom of the bucket and you will need to raise the bucket itself over time if you’re using with chicks.I used a hole saw to drill a hole just big enough for the hose and then bought a rubber drain plug (pictured) from our local hardware store to keep the water clean and fresh. Over the first night of use, there were no leaks or wet bedding. The bucket is still full and the chicks were happily pecking to get their water in the morning.So thankful for a solution that keeps bedding dry, water clean, and eliminates the need to fill up the waterer two or three times a day. I will update over time if anything changes, but as of now I’m very impressed and relieved.I only used three of the five provided nipples. I am saving the other two in case any of them malfunction.
