I haven't looked but they are only designed for a stand alone device. They wouldn't bother the extra cost of a relay

How do I attach to the ceiling?

Inside the box you will find some screws and also some plastic plugs. Step 1: Look at the alarms mounting base. Find where the screws will hold the mounting base onto the ceiling. These are usually holes that are shaped like an old-fashioned keyhole. Step 2: Hold the base plate of the alarm against the ceiling and use a pencil to make 2 marks on the ceiling, at the locations where you need the screws to go into the ceiling. Step 3: Set up your drill by inserting a drill-bit which is slightly smaller in thickness than the plastic plugs your alarm came with. Now, drill holes in the ceiling where you marked with the pencil. Step 4: Use a hammer to tap the plastic plugs into/inside the holes you have made. If the holes are too tight, use a slightly bigger drill-bit. But, don't make the holes too big or the plastic plugs will just fall out. Step 5: Hold the plastic mounting base onto the ceiling with one hand. With the other hand, use a screw and screwdriver to attach the mounting base onto the ceiling by screwing the screw into the plastic plug (which you just tapped into the ceiling using the hammer in the previous step.) Repeat this for the other screw. The screws in the ceiling should now support the mounting base of the alarm and hold it against the ceiling. Ensure the screws are tight, but do not tighten them too much or you will break/bend the mounting plate. Step 6: Now put the alarm itself onto the mounting plate on the ceiling. You may need to read the manufacturers instructions on how this procedure is done.

If i wanted to buy a new one, could i use an existing base plate.  Father recently died and wanted to just replace base plate once and swap them round

If the old alarm is the same model as this one (10Y29) then yes, you can re-use the old base plate.

Is this suitable for kitchen containing gas boiler?

It is suitable for use in a kitchen. It is also best to have a heat alarm in the kitchen and a carbon monoxide alarm at least 1 metre away from your gas boiler but no more than 3 metres away.
