There is a side button that opens the knife... However, the blade is not spring loaded. You have to manually pull or "flip" the blade into the locking position. While not strictly a high grade stainless or super steel alloy. Buck Knives have used 420 HC for quite a while. I own two Fastback knives which work very well as everyday cutting tools, though the gravity mechanism is somewhat lax. A good knife for under $20 & one that can take abuse with a solid lock up, the red scales attract too much attention for EDC, though being a fan of Milwaukee tools I bought mine for home use. **Q: what kind of stainless steel is used for the blade, like 440 or what** A: Milwaukee does not specify the type beyond being stainless steel, and the blade itself does not appear to be marked with the type of steel it is made from.
