Review: Finally Solves the 'Fraction Hunt' – Great Display, But Needs Firmware Refinement - The addition of a circular display to the digital calipers is a great innovation. The ability to show an analog scale and a digital readout on the same screen is truly unique. This is particularly helpful when working with fractional inches since you can quickly see how close you are to a common fraction such as 3/8" or 1/4" instead of having to convert from decimals or 128ths. On standard digital calipers, precise measurements often result in awkward fractions (like 57/128") or obscure decimals (like 0.4453"). I usually have to slide the jaws back and forth to hunt for the nearest common fraction (like 7/16"). The visual dial display on this Dasqua solves that problem instantly. Unfortunately, I think that Dasqua has missed an opportunity by only allowing the display to show one unit type at a time (e.g., millimeters, decimal inches, fractional inches). Having a robust digital screen, it would have been a great opportunity to show multiple units at the same time. Having the decimal value for precision and the analog dial for quick fractional estimation simultaneously would prevent mental conversion errors and speed up workflow. I don't know if firmware upgrades are possible on this unit, but perhaps this is a future enhancement opportunity. So far the battery life seems fine, but I will have to see how the rechargeable battery holds up. A few reviews I've read elsewhere seem to indicate that the rechargeable battery may only last a few years and be non-replaceable. The display definitely adds a fair bit of weight to the device, so these are not as lightweight as most calipers. I also hope they can withstand a few minor drops. Time will tell. All in all this is an innovative product. They are a bit pricey, but I picked these up on sale. I hope to see Dasqua refine this further and other manufacturers start integrating circular displays into their calipers. Review: Same device available from other retailers. - These calipers are made by only a few manufacturers in China. If you absolutely have to have this model…with the digital dial, get the WEN version. It’s markedly less money for the same unit.
