## Description

The AmpliFi HD Router is part of Ubiquiti's residential mesh wireless range. The router includes a smart LCD screen so you can quickly check your network metrics including current and total throughput

Review: Used it to replace my Sky Q WiFi - wish I'd done it years ago! - Part of what I liked about Sky Q was the mesh network and that each box would act like a WiFi Access Point and so extend my network. It mostly did that, but frequently cut out the WiFi and increasingly required a Router reboot to fix it. I decided to invest in a separate WiFi Router and after some research went with the Amplifi HD. So far no regrets and it's working perfectly. It's not the most fully featured WiFi router (see Cons below) but I was aware of that in advance and it does everything I need and keeps it nice and simple because of that. PROs: * Incredibly simple to set up * Mobile app is nice and particularly like the feature to see how much each device is using, pause their internet access, and even set times when the kids devices won't be able to access the internet. * Strong signal - so much that I didn't need the Mesh points even though in a reasonably sized house. Luckily I hoped this would be the case and only bought the router and not the full kit. * Ability to extend it if I want with Mesh points. * Teleport (https://www.amplifi.com/teleport/) looks like a great extra option (though don't see it for sale in UK yet). * A lot of detail on most connected devices to help identify them. * Looks much nicer than any other router. * Nice touchscreen, though not sure I'll used it much to be honest. * Support looks great from what I read online - though not had to use it yet thankfully! CONs * No firewall. * Limited built in traffic monitoring - which would have been useful to identify some devices which only gave up basic information to the router! * Not sure about Mesh points if I ever want them. Look a bit large and no Ethernet port on them. But knew all these in advance A few things to mention specific to Sky Q if using it to replace that. For a start Sky uses it's own 5 Ghz mesh to communicate between the main box and the minis. Unfortunately it looks like this cannot be made to go over the normal network. So still need a Sky Q Booster to reach one of the Sky Q minis at the back of the house, even though Internet reaches there fine with the Amplifi router. Was hoping to remove all Sky Q wifi kit but looks like I can't. Though so far doesn't seem to be interfering and removing the Internet traffic off of the Sky Q one seems to have had a positive impact on that and it's now stable. The work on different 5 GHz channels (36 for Sky, 40 for Amplifi) which I guess is the reason. The other thing to be aware of is that Sky Q has lots of virtual devices with different MAC addresses (0e:fc:e0... range for me) so took a while figuring out what they were registering with an unknown name.
Review: Stop searching for wifi mesh systems, this is the one to buy! - So... we live in a grade 2 listed building with walls thick enough to repell a fairly decent Norman Invasion. Our chimney breast is 6 feet thick so it’s fair to say that WiFi in our house is as weak as my wife’s tea.... not helped by the fact our broadband router is on an outside wall of a 4 storey building. So, first interesting and not advertised fact is that you can run this unit through a network switch. ( to get an optimised central location) Our set up is a hard wired 30 port network running on a cat 7-80mb broadband... So, took 5 mins to set up with the unit plugged into a house network hub (not the router) we now have a secondary ( and far stronger ) wireless network with an average (tested in 5 rooms behind thick old walls) 75mb download and 19mb upload speeds. On a final note - the unit looks awesome, the screen is great, the halo ring is good enough for a nightlight on our landing and the mesh units are plug and play.. Can’t recommend this kit enough....if you have WiFi dead spots in your house and the skills to run a cat7 cable to the optimum spot in your house from your router then this is well worth the massive price.... my wife is now running at ninja shopping levels on eBay and desertcart whilst downloading full UHD midget porn films...

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does uk model refer to the uk power plug ?**
A: Yes, I believe so. In the early days it came without a UK plug so people had to source their own but it still worked. Now, the ones I have purchased via Amazon and other UK retailers come with a UK plug.

**Q: Will this replace a Sky router?**
A: No, but it can connect to the Sky router and replace the WiFi part of it by turning that off in the Sky router config page. It gives a much stronger, and more reliable, WiFi connection than the Sky router.

**Q: Does this router need to be plugged directly into my current router or can it be plugged into an ethernet port in another room.**
A: It doesn’t need your main router to be plugged in.

My main virgin router sits in the loft.
This product sits In my downstairs room which is plugged to a Ethernet port in the wall which ultimately is connected to my main router in the loft

**Q: Will this be able to handle my 500mbps virgin wifi?**
A: Yes(500mb virgin service you mean? The WiFi speed will depend on your layout and device etc), I’ve got BT FTTP and get around 780MB download speed. I got a second amplifi HD and wired it to the other one to ensure full coverage with WiFi which translates to normally around 400MB WiFi and full speed when on CAT5. Think with virgin you’ll need to switch your Virgin hub into modem mode to connect it to the the AMPLIFI so as long as that supports that speed which obviously it should.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great home router and fantastic WiFi
*by C***L on 28 July 2021*

Great home router, easy to setup and provides great wifi. Some things to be aware of though. It will not support VLANs so if you want anything other than a basic "flat" network this is not the product for you. Also there is no WPA3 support and looking at the support forums there is no intension of ever providing it on this product. Amplifi seem to be concentrating on their new Alien products over adding features to this product.
