This hub has first gear (1) as direct drive, and they claim to ship with 21T, 23T or 25T hub sprocket; most reports I've seen say they only ship, like mine, with 25T. From my experience with another brand hub that this replaced, I reckoned I needed something between 25 - 28 on the front, I could find only 26, it works for me (TM) on 26" wheels. Again it depends on what you're using the bike for, this is not a Time Trial hub, be prepared to change the F-B ratio if you're not comfortable with it. **Q: The description states that gear 1 is direct drive. does that mean that with this hub you can only get higher gears, but no lower ones?** A: Yes. I have the SA to replace a Nuvinci which had the "direct" or 1:1 drive in the middle of the range, with a 33 tooth front & 17 tooth rear sprocket. The 33:25 I get with SA is usable, but too high for comfort. I'm waiting on a 26 tooth front sprocket so I can start smiling again. **Q: This listing says "305% gear range" twice, "overall range - 325%" and "gear 8 - 325%." which one is it, 305% or 325%?** A: Sturmey Archer on their specification sheet for this hub, and the owner's manual, says 325%. Disclaimer: I haven't actually measured it. **Q: Is this hub wide enough for a 4" fat tire rim?** A: This hub requires a 5.25" fork spacing. The single chain-line and chain-tensioner (required by the de-railling-type) keep everything nice.. --Despite fallen branches that occur in the fall and winter (here, in California). -Limited "tangles" and resulting "down-time"...As this gear hub was transplanted on a Schwinn (with chrome-plated rims), the addition of the disk brake is especially good for those wet days. (The caliper brakes do nothing in this weather..)If you have the "where-with-all" to "Hot-Rod" a 1967-Schwinn to include a disk brake (The hardware to mount a disk brake wasn't standard on frames until about 1999), I recommend this hub. If you have a newer frame bike that includes the mounts for disk brakes, good! --Be sure to check the "OLD" dimensions against your back drop-out. I removed the over-lock-nut to permit fitting into my older frame..The gear-ratios permit me to travel with little fatigue. I commute 15 miles total each work day. I love this heavy steel bike and the capability of being where I want to be in a very predictable amount of time..I've had too much down-time with derailers. And, I've been in two near-fatal accidents with them as well. --I won't ride a bike with that gearing. To change to 26t will cost me a new crankset... ### ⭐⭐⭐ 3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not great *by S***E on Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2013* This hub will work well if you can stand the loud ratcheting sound that gets louder with the gear ratio increasing. It bothered me so much i exchanged it at my local bike shop 3 times (could even hear it over the music on my iPod with headphones on) with no improvement. It gets the job done, but if you want a quiet ride then do as i did and get a Shimano Nexus. Cost is about the same (minus the shifter). But you do lose some gear inch ratio in the end, unless your Lance Armstrong you wouldnt notice it all that much.
