I find that helmets isolate you from the noise around you and you can't hear what's going on. Also, it's too heavy for my neck, I can't stand it. So the headband is perfect for me. Lightweight, I wear it over a merino hat and it holds very well. It doesn't protect the top of the head, but all the way around in case of a fall or if my head hits the ice.
