absolutely amazing kinfe
one of the first knives i bought after subscribing to nutnfancy on youtube a couple years ago, i have never been unhappy that i bought the tech bowie. everything he said in his review is true. starting at the handle, it's great. the finger grooves fit my own perfectly, unlike the seal pup elite (which are a bit wider and more spread out). the molded kraton is super comfortable and it's not too long or too short. the butt cap is nicely done, big enough so you know it's there, but not ridiculous. hammerable and has a lanyard hole too. the cross-guard is steel and all the metal pieces are finished with the tini coating. the blade has a choil larger than that of the gov-tac and easily accommodates my forefinger for choking up. it's a great bowie design, needle sharp tip with the faceted point and great belly. it came out of the box razor sharp, only slightly sharper now that i touched it up on a steel rod honer. it competes with my gov-tac for sharpest knife i have. the stock is .24" and is full thickness for 3.5". it tapers very gently, unlike the gov-tac, into that thin point. the grinds are smoother and all the edges are softened, also unlike the gov-tac, making this a prettier knife. i do worry about abusing the tip because it tapers to that fine point, no doubt it'd be great for penetration. so i label this knife as a fighter and not exactly an outdoors knife. the tini finish is not so much a 'coating' but is instead more of a process done to the outermost layer of metal, kind of similar to bluing on guns. it's very sleek, glossy, and wear resistant and to keep it looking its best, use oil and wipe off the excess or wipe it down with a silicone gun cloth. the sheath is great, kydex so no water damaging it, no rotting or soaking up to rust the knife because it's got a drainage hole. i like more compactness with my knives, so i usually leave off the button clasp and belt attachment. the sheath is very form-fitting and sleek. as with all my sogs, this tech bowie had amazing fit and finish, pretty much perfect quality control and it's just a cool blade imho. sharp, strong, and so far, AUS-8 has been proving itself pretty well. i would highly recommend this for any collector or knife enthusiast, along with anyone wanting a capable medium sized, perfectly made fixed blade. i would classify this knife more of a hunter/fighter than utility and outdoors survival, but that's just my take.

Fantastic workhorse knife!
Thick, SHARP blade. Very durable. I've used this knife for everything from splitting small logs for the campfire, to carving pumpkins, to hammering tent stakes. Perfect combination of functionality and looks. BEAUTIFUL TiNi finish on the blade, which also adds to the durability (I store my knife out of the sheath with a thin layer of gun oil and it has remained spotless even with hard use). Regarding the sheath, I opted for kydex and have been very happy. It offers flexibility in how you carry the knife, whether sideways, upside down, etc. and the plastic retention clip is secure enough to easily hold the knife upside without even using the strap...though, I'd recommend using the strap. The blade itself is very similar (nearly identical) to SOGs "SEAL Team", but I think the handle really sets this knife apart. It's thicker and heavier, with a slightly sticky rubberized surface that securely and perfectly fits into my hand. On backpacking trips, I opt for my SOG SEAL Pup knife because it is substantially lighter weight and a more manageable size, but the Tech Bowie is truly a backcountry knife. Its size and durability make it capable of almost any task you could ask of it.

Absolutely amazing
This is one of the more special knives that you can have in your arsenal. Beautiful, sharp, well balanced knife that you will pick up about 10 times a day just because you have it. Would rather have it as a showcase piece that use it in the wilderness, only bc I did not expect it to be really this nice of a knife. There is one minor issue, it holds and edge for a long time, but when that time comes where you need to sharpen it, be careful because the black titanium nitrate (TiNi) blade does scratch easily, and you will see the Aus 8 stainless steel come through. This is one issue I did not expect. I chose this knife over the Ka-Bar because of the stainless steel over the carbon, which rusts. Bottom line, if you are thinking about buying this knife and are concerned about the money, don't be. This knife is absolutely worth every penny and if you are a knife man a must have. Take my word for it, it's near perfect.

Great Knife
The balance of this knife is amazing and it has a really great edge to it. The sheath is also great but a little stiff at times which could be good or bad depending on how/where you wear your sheath. The model I received, however, had a slight yellow discoloration to the white stripes on the handle. What should be contemporary styling (which I was excited about) has just become somewhat of an eyesore for me. The white stripes were yellow and dirty/discolored straight out of the box but it does not affect the usefulness or performance of the knife. It's still a superb replacement for my old buck and after lot's of use I'm sure the white stripes would get dirty anyway. Maybe I'm over reacting, but I notice these things. Just to be clear the performance of of the knife is flawless. The condition it arrives in however, may not be so flawless.

Despite the severe late autumn weather of of the Martimes, Canada Post managed to run today. And I received the last of the three knives I planned to buy this year as part of the process of updating my bushcraft gear and replacing the beloved Ka-bar USMC knife I had through twenty years in the Alaskan wilderness and Canadian north woods (did I mention my wife lost it when I lent it to her for 15 minutes on a camping trip?) This time, having more funds at my disposal than I did in Alaska, I selected knives with intentions a little more specialized, though I must admit–the Ka-bar USMC knife is, IMO, an about perfect bushcraft knife, doing everything well from prepping a trout for cooking, to butchering a caribou, to carving wood to make tools. (Did I mention my wife lost that beloved knife when I lent it to her for 15 minutes on a camping trip?) If it had not been lost, I doubt I’d have ever bought another knife–I’m not a collector–far too practical. So, today the last of the three knives I ordered arrived, a SOG Tech Bowie–which is close in size and design to the Ka-bar USMC (did I mentioned my beloved wife lost it?) but with some substantial differences. It’s made of AUS8 stainless steel. I used to hate stainless steel–in the old days, it was virtually impossible to sharpen, hard and brittle. It’s one virtue was it was almost impervious to rust. But AUS8 has got to be close to the perfect steel. With the right heat treatment, it’s hardness is equal to the best carbon steels, making it tough but able to take an edge and retain it without problem. It’s not quite as impervious to rust as the old garbage 440 stainless of the 80s and 90s, but it’s close. The design of the SOG Tech makes it an almost perfect bushman’s knife. It is ostensibly designed for combat, using a bowie-style blade similar to the Ka-bar USMC, but if your main purpose for a knife is to prepare fish and game, prep food, cut cordage and shape wood into tools, it’s nearly perfect. The drop clip point is as sharp as a needle and would penetrate the toughest hide with ease. Personally, I would have preferred a beefier point such as you find on the Cold Steel Trail Master–it’s a bit tougher for tasks like creating the bowl portions of firebow rigs. I’d have willingly given up a little of the SOG Tech’s penetration power for that additional toughness as I am interested in a knife as a tool, not a weapon. And the needle-sharp point gives the SOG Tech a bit of a “tacticool” look, which I am not crazy about. Still, having studied dozens of other knives in the price range, I feel the SOG Tech was the closest to meet my needs. The other knives in the size and design range I was after that were close to the Tech were made in carbon steel, and I very specifically wanted a knife in stainless for those long wet periods eastern Canada is so prone to. An alternative with bushcraft more in mind is the SOG Creed. It sports the same hilt but is a bit heftier at the point, with a typical clip point with no drop intended to maximize toughness. I was tempted by the Creed but decided against it because I don’t like knives that are bigger toward the front of the blade. They make poor game processing knives and tend to have sheathing problems. The SOG Tech has a stainless steel butt-cap and guard. Many newer knives offer guards made of the same polymer material the hilts are made from. Such guards occasionally crumble after a few years of moderate use. I was adamant that whatever knife I chose must have a metal guard. It was not so imporant to me the butt-cap be metal as I don’t use knives for hammers–that’s stupid as any handy stick or rock can make a better improvised hammer–but it is a nice touch that will add to the knife’s overall toughness. The guard is substantial in front of the fingers, keeping the fingers from slipping forward onto the razor-sharp blade. The guard also extends over the palm side, but is only half size, and it is easy to choke up on the blade for fine carving and cutting. The palm side guard is just substantial enough to stop the blade and palm from coming into contact but allow for easy fine work. The black TiNi finish is beautiful. I haven’t had a chance to test it for durability yet, but I’ve heard it’s far tougher than Ka-bar finishes which last well if you don’t abuse them. I think the TiNi finish is unnecessary given the blade is stainless, but it can’t hurt and it looks great. The blade is a quarter inch thick at the spine. It is a tough though not overly heavy, well-balanced tool that will last a lifetime with appropriate use and care. It is easily the finest and most elegant of the three knives I bought to replace the Ka-bar (did I mention my wife lost it?). When SOG makes a knife, they tend to do everything very nicely (excepting the garbage sheath that comes with their Northwest Ranger). The SOG Tech bowie comes with an extraordinary kydex sheath. It fits the knife like a glove, is suitable to any kind of carry, and since it won’t hold water, helps the knife stay dry and rust free. It is a bit snug and you have to put in some effort to withdraw the knife but that will relax with time. Overall, the SOG Tech bowie is an imminently practical work of art. I still like my Cold Steel Trail Master bowie a bit more, mainly because it is bigger and has a tougher drop clip point, but the AUS8 stainless steel and imminently useful size and design of the SOG Tech make it an extremely close second.

I've wanted a SOG Bowie for a long time, but they're pretty pricey. I already own a couple of SOG knives (Tsunami, Seal Pup) and really like their AUS 8 steel. When the price dropped to an acceptable level, I bought one. Meets my high expectations - finish is without flaw, great edge out of the box, and the handle material is just about perfect - grippy yet firm. My one complaint is with the Kydex sheath - SOG has let the quality slide over the years. I have an older version of the same sheath, and the retention strap is much better than on the current one. Really, SOG? How much are you saving by cheaping out on sheath hardware? Get one, but wait until you find it for about 1/2 of SOG's MSRP.

I read reviews on this knife and watched people hacking wood with it on youtube. That's like using a hammer to drive screws - stupid. This is a fighting knife and that's that. Call it whatever you want but I hope to never use it for anything it was designed to do. Still, I like knives and I love this one. It has an awe-factor and really looks stunning IRL. It seems well made although see my review of the SOG Creed for an issue with the proprietary pommel mechanism. That shouldn't be an issue if you ever use this knife as it was "designed". As with all 3 SOG knives I've bought, it came reasonably sharp but definitely needed a little introduction to some diamonds. Once I gave it a little love, it was dangerously sharp and made me love it even more. This was a gift to myself and I think I should probably write the sender a thank-you letter for his thoughtfulness.

The workmanship is fantastic but the holster takes some getting used to. I may buy a leather sheath instead but need to "soften" up the current one and try to make it work. I think it just needs to break in a bit.
