I think this is because we make it too thin. Making shapes with pancake batter is fun, but I don't know if I want to make my batter super thick in order to get that!I wish the spout hole was smaller for thinner batter. (Maybe they could offer two kinds, based on how people like to make their batter?)Also, they are larger than I expected! This is great for holding more batter! What I love about this is how much control you have. I actually use it for my double Belgium waffle maker. It comes with a cup which is so messy. I bought these pens and they worked like a charm. I mixed the pancake batter in a bowl as I wasn't sure this item would have the capacity to do so. After everything was mixed, I poured the batter into the pen/dispenser. I screwed the lid on, and batter started to pour out the top. I thought maybe I was squeezing the pen so I put it on the counter, and the batter continued to pour out. I ended up dumping two pancakes worth of batter out before it stopped pouring out on its own.
