A gentle jazz fusion work, representing the best of its epoch

Most of the ones looking for this album are only familiar with the track "Expansions", since it has been released on many compilations. But listening to the entire album is so much better. Sometimes you'd think that these guys went to the future for their inspiration and flashed themselves back to the seventies to record this album, 'cause up to this day this material by Lonnie Liston Smith & The Cosmic Echoes is fabulously modern, funky and danceable. A CD you can't afford to miss if you're a jazz/funk DJ, a beat/sample digger or a jazz aficionado.

I love everything Lonnie Liston Smith has made. Since I reacquainted myself with him after a 20 year hiatus, I was glad to be able to pick up this CD from Amazon. I play it while driving, use it to work out at the gym, and generally love each and every song.

Lonnie Liston Smith is awesome. Use to go see his brother "Donald" at St. Nick's Pub in Harlem, NY every Friday night. He would always play my favorite song the moment I walked into the club. Awesome!

Expansions is a terrific jazz funk fusion album and the true gem of Lonnie Liston Smith's catalog (though Cosmic Funk, Astral Traveling and Visions of a Golden Dream are also superb). At $3.99 this is a ridiculous bargain!

This is the Lonnie I remember lisening to for the first time in 1980 at Edwards AFB,Ca. My good friend Brian Jackson turned me on to jazz and I thank him for that. This CD rocks.

The product came in the time projected. I cannot stop listening to this cd. I listen to it on the way in to work & on the way home. Will be buying his greatest hits next.

This album opens with a terrific tune, sung by Lonnie Liston Smith's brother, and I think it is a track that many will know. The album itself is in a pretty laid-back style. Smith had been through a number of groups before, including the Jazz Messengers and working with Pharoah Sanders and Miles Davis, but this is a different thing. It has a lot of soul going on and the fusion aspects are pretty lightly-applied. The keyboard work is, of course excellent throughout but the whole ensemble manages to regularly hit the groove and in paces really start to funk things up. It is a perfect example of where jazz was heading in the 1970s. Well worth buying.

This album is an absolute classic in the Spiritual Jazz sphere. The musicianship is of the highest calibre and new music from Lonnie 'Liston' Smith (now Dr Lonnie Smith) continues to be important.
