The next day I arose just after sunrise and scanned the same wall of trees to the east but first without binoculars, and forced to squinting—I could hardly see anything in the distance due to the extreme glare while facing the morning blazing sun. Then I lifted my new binoculars to my eyes and scanned the same trees again and was amazed at how these optics cut through the blinding glare enough for me to detect individual tree trunks and branches in the hazy distance—sans eye strain or squinting—and if fox-sized or hawk-sized creatures, or larger, were out there I would have spotted them! And I would have been able to observe their behavior without causing undue stress to my eyes. Then slowly shifting viewing direction, I followed a frozen channel running northward, just a few hundred feet before me, hosting numerous blazing pools of thawed snow, and again I was pleased at how these binoculars handled the nuisance glare—toning down irritating reflections and enabling a nearly unfettered view of the frozen waterway.
