When you push the release button it glides closed or to the desired shorter length. Opposite those others where you have to push the button to hold it in place and it usually isn’t strong enough to hold the tape or breaks easily. I’ve used it extensively already. Including measuring 19 windows to order blinds. The strength and flexibility are a plus. I’ve used some in the past that got a permanent kink or bend in the metal and never worked the same. This one may be pink, but it hasn’t faltered. Despite my bending around tight spaces and holding it down with my foot it has remained faithful and straight. I am not good at deciphering those tiny lines on traditional tape measures and this one is SO easy to read with the fractions printed right there on it. Simplifies my life immensely!
