It gives detail and advice,practice ideas and samples to reference too. As with most beginner art books it goes through the materials and different kinds of marks you can make to produce the image you are looking to get on paper. Its practical advice I would definitely take and even though I have dabbled off and on long enough to know all these tips I was still able to pick up fresh ones that stuck in my head.One thing I did like about this book it has a small section on drawing styles. I have received a lot of books on this subject and only a few I can think of over 20 years bothered to talk about these different styles. I think it's very well written, thorough and seemingly quite comprehensive, easy to follow, down to earth and practical. I find some how to do it art books are not so good - they can be a bit condescending to the reader - this one uses easy to follow explanations and the explanatory drawings in it are similarly well designed, clear and very helpful. It begins with the usual topic of materials and supplies, then progresses steadily to cover every topic that I would think is covered in extensive art classes for beginners. Two things that stand out in Nice's book: 1) in a concise style, she gives reasons to support her suggestions, helping readers to remember a process or material; 2) the examples are plentiful, detailed, and, what I find refreshing, include several "what's wrong" sketches--typical mistakes--why they're wrong and how to fix them.
