It's surprising

Don't ask me why I bought this. BUT! I'm glad I did. It shows you how much more intelligent they were in Greece in 323 BCE than us around here today. You think I'm kidding. Read the book. Aristotle assumes a lot when it comes to defining terms. But they are there if late on in the book. I didn't think the book would do much except maybe help me be a better critical thinker. I was a bit wrong. Just today, without thinking, I told someone the County alteration of the new budget was altered only in "form" but not in "substance". BINGO!!!!! Straight out of Aristotle! So if you want to go deeper, buy it - if its still available. Add it to your physical library and will it to your children. When they grow up where will your PUNY iPad be??? By the way, Metaphysics is the study of knowing.

Valued piece of astronomical history

I have always enjoyed the Loeb Classical Library books and Aristotle's "On the Heavens" is no exception. As an astronomical historian, this is a great book as it demonstrates the beginnings of astronomical thought. Although a lot of what Aristotle says would later be proven incorrect, ideas had to start somewhere, and if you ignore what you know about astronomy, his explanations of what things are and why things happen are quite ingenious.

The section on practical philosophy should be "essential reading" fo any new politician - since it raises questions like "who is

Essential reading I would say for evryone who wants to get a rough idea of what Aristotle was all about, and what his main areas of study and influence were. The section on practical philosophy should be "essential reading" fo any new politician - since it raises questions like "who is the government for" - and what do we want the government to be doing on our behalf. This book was an invaluable resource for my own talks and essays on Aristotle.

Aristotle: On the Heavens

For readers who may be unfamiliar with the English edition of the Leob Classical Library, only the Introduction, footnotes, Arguments and comments in the volume "On the Heavens" are in English. Beginning on page 4 and continuing to the end of the volume the language used by the original author - in this case, Greek - is located on the left-hand page and professor Guthrie's superb translation in English is located on the right-hand page. The Greek-English comparison is enlightening. If a reader chooses to discover the fundamental Aristotelian understanding that forms the underlying foundation of his "Physics", then "On the Heavens" (De caelo) is an indispensable read.

Invaluable

I am not a philosopher, but I am a Classical scholar. I think that having read much of Aristotle in Greek compensates for my ignorance of the subsequent history of philosophy.I know of no other book on Aristotle that approaches the concision, insightfulness and clarity of Randall's. (Oretga y Gasset's observation, "clarity is a form of courtesy that the philosopher owes," is at least as true of expositors of philosophy as of philosophers.)Randall has done a great service for everyone who wants to understand the basic approach and ideas of the man who is without doubt the most influential philosopher who ever lived. He is especially helpful in elucidating Aristotle's four aitia and explaining why the translation that is usually used for them - "causes" - is misleading. He is also correct to emphasize the fundamental difference between Aristotle's Final aition and Plato's. However, in doing so, he states (pages 228-9) that for Aristotle, the Final aition is never identical with the Efficient aition. That is incorrect. (See Aristotle's Physics 198a.)

Boring

Smart man but boring too much over analyzing simpleness. If there was more analyzation of nature it would of been exciting.

Amazon can sell these Harvard Loeb Library editions.

This is a top product: bilingual edition of Aristotles’ Metaphysics in a compact format.
