Does this protect your screen

Kind of. It has a ridge around the edge that semi-protects your screen. However, it provides no real screen protection and so I would highly recommend buying a separate screen protector. It is worth noting that this product also discolors quickly, which is mostly a cosmetic issue but is something to note nonetheless.
