Will it carry a pistol?

Not conveniently. The pockets are all pretty large, but that's the problem. For a pistol and clips, it's like each pocket are big caverns of space. I like to have my sidearm be stowed more securely, and i like to smaller pockets that clips can be stored in easy for organization and quick access. With this bag, everything just get's dumped in without organization.

It says polyester, does feel like canvas at all?

Very strong material, canvas like. I’ve had mine for almost a year, good quality bag.

Does the hip strap have molle system?

Yep!! This is a pretty good bag.. you can put a health med kit on the hip belt
