OR, you could use drywall anchors to put screws into, not as strong as screwed into wood, but SHOULD be ok unless your hanging 15-20 lbs + off of it ... In MY OPINION. **Q: What is the diameter of the bar?** A: Jeez ya gonna make me get my tape measure out.... 3/8 inch, looks sleek, I hang 3 cast iron skillets, measuring spoon and cup set, and 2 tongs off it, occasionally a banana bunch, bet I could easily hang 20 more lbs on it, very sturdy, no flex, I hang mine under my cabinet. **Q: Do hooks slide?** A: These hooks easily >slide. So there you have it find one invest the 5-10 dollars for it and you can ignore drilling half the time if not more. I works for me and I have some ultra hard walls and wood to set screws into. OH however if you have drywall you'll need to drill a hole and set with one of those plastic anchors to secure the screws and prevent wall damage. Just saying. Our house has mostly wood paneling. It was custom made in the 50's by the local lumber company 4 homes for their adult grandkids. Went a bit wild with all wood paneling. REAL BOARDS not veneer stuff.
