The older kids (ages 7-11) had a great time designing masks both for themselves and the smaller kids (ages 2-4). The masks come separate from the elastic bands, which makes it much easier to color the masks in, and the bands are easy to attach and stay on pretty securely. The elastics are also a much better quality than I expected: rather than the skinny fragile elastics that you would see on (for example) little paper birthday hats, these bands are a bit thicker, more like a hair elastic. As other reviewers have mentioned, the bands are a bit long, but with the application of 2 or 3 braincells, we figured out how to tied a knot in the back to fit smaller heads. Most impressive was the way the masks held color. The kids colored them with washable markers (nothing special-- the same brand we all send to school with our kids) and the ink went on smoothly and didn't smudge at all. I think even the kids were impressed by how good their own creations turned out. My 3 year old loves the one her older sister made her so much that she won't take it off, which is a testament to both how cute it is, and how comfortable it is for her to wear.
