Thank you for your question! The letter plates are hinged. The letter plate screws onto the external portion of the chute. For installation we always recommend reaching out to a local contractor.

Exterior door - hinges up and down, 12.5 x 5”; Mail slot opening, 9 x 2.25”; Mail slot opening to first curve downward, 4”; Mail slot opening to end of chute, both top and bottom of chute, 8”. This is a rugged and handsome product, and with a price to match, but worth the price if you like it’s looks and features. Took me 6 to 8 hours to install; that involved complicated exterior wall surface. Good luck. stchar
