On my 39 Chevy it was only about 1/8 inch but it could vary on other cars.

Do these go on the top of the door above the window?

I mounted my pair on front edge near the top of the door frame (1926 model T) but they are fairly versatile and can go on the top or on the side and even on the bottom.
