Okay, it ain't exactly glamorous, but it's an excellent product
As the title of my review notes, this is not really the kind of thing you like showing off to your friends, such as that new 4G iPhone or giant HDTV, but nonetheless, it's about the best product of its type available. Just the details, first. First, this toilet seat was much easier to install than most others, because the underbowl plastic nut on the nylon bolt has an integral elongated plastic wing that makes it quite easy to grasp the nut, while the top bolt is tightened with either a phillips or flathead screwdriver. Unlike most other seats, you won't need a pair of pliers to grasp that nut to tighten this one down. Another very clever feature with this is that the seat can be completely removed without the use of tools, simply by rotating both securing latches that cover the boltheads about 90 degrees counterclockwise. The complete seat can then easily be lifted off so that the area under the backside of the hinge can be cleaned, and the seat itself can even be hosed down if needed. Of course, the main selling point of this seat is the "Whisper Close" feature that gently lowers both the seat and seat cover, completely making the characteristic seat crash when lowered, a thing of the past. This feature works so well that I sat on the edge of the tub when I first lowered it, and the whole thing took about a full minute to close fully, first the seat, then the cover. I could BARELY hear each close, and I would not have heard them at all only standing a yard away outside the bathroom. Also, you don't necessarily have to wait for the slow close feature, as you can simply push both down by hand if in some kind of hurry, so you get the best of both worlds. The slow close is a real winner here. I was also favorably impressed with the construction, with the seat being constructed of very stout wood, which did not flex even slightly with even my 230 pounds on it. Some of the cheap plastic seats will flex pretty easily, so this is just right. I also found the hinge assembly very solid, again not allowing the seat to slide sideways, as some of the lesser quality seats have done with me. One more thing that really pleases me with this product is that it is made in USA, a VERY important selling point to me. I like this seat so much that I intend to recommend it to all of my extended family members, or I just might give each of them one of their own. Top shelf product, even if you might get a bit of a chuckle out of a toilet seat review. ***UPDATE*** About a year after I originally bought this seat, the wood screws holding the lid onto its hinge pulled out. I didn't like that they were standard wood screws anyway, so I fixed it by drilling the lid all the way through and using four machine screws with lock washers to keep the nuts from backing out. It's actually better now than as it came stock. The seat is still working perfectly and nearly silently. I'd still recommend it to anyone, but would suggest getting the four machine screws, lock washers, and nuts for the lid.

Nice seat for the throne, easy install hardware and procedure
The seat is almost twice as heavy as the thin cheap plastic one it replaced, but feels and looks more substantial. As comfy as any toilet seat I ever sat on, solid wood with what looks like pretty thick coats of enamel in white all over it. Really neat installation hardware and technique -- two proprietary design bolts which lock into the underside of each hinge mount tab, and two each of the proprietary nuts (really double nuts) all in white nylon. When you put the bolts in the seat mount tabs then drop them thru the toilet bowl from the top, you hand tighten the nylon double nuts, then us a wrench (socket, box end or crescent) to keep tightening up the lower of the double-nuts until you break it off (yes, break it off) leaving the upper nut firmly tightened and in place with a strong tight fit. In essence tightening the lower nut to break off point is like using a poor man's torque wrench -- once the upper-lower nut is tight enough, just a little more effort breaks the lower nut off the upper nut at just the right amount of tightening. Amazing design actually. So you literally cannot over-tighten if you follow the directions. Ingenious. Also, both the lid and the seat have slow closing hinges, so no more midnight "bang" - oops in the dark I dropped the seat or the lid and woke up half the house. Good looking seat too. I don't break toilet lids very often, but I hope I remember the name of this one next time I break another one.

Much, much, much better than our old toilet seats
The Mayfair 148E2 toilet seat is vastly superior to our old toilet seats. I bought just one seat at first -- to check it out -- and now I'll buy more for the rest of our bathrooms. Pros: 1. The attachment between the seat and the toilet bowl is easy to set up and much more solid than with the old seats. It attaches with plastic bolts, as usual, but the heads of the Mayfair bolts have a deep slot that accepts either a standard or a Philips-head screwdriver. Our old seat bolts had a shallow, curved-bottom slot and could only be tightened -- weakly -- using a dime. Once you have the bolts in place -- 5 minutes at most -- the whole Mayfair seat locks onto the bolt assembly. There are no awkward, hard-to-pry-off plastic caps over the bolt heads either. 2. Because the bolts can be tightened so thoroughly, the seat doesn't come loose. Our old seats were constantly loosening and shifting sideways, but not the Mayfair. 3. These seats are made of wood and feel much more substantial than the old plastic ones. 4. The seat's quick release knobs let you easily remove it to clean underneath. No one in our house had bothered with that before, but removing the old seat showed me just how much "dirt" can accumulate there! Cons(sort of): 1. The damper that slows the closing of the seat is still pretty tight -- the seat closes reeeaaally sloooowly. Presumably this will improve as the damper mechanism breaks in.

Excellent Toilet Seat, for the Most Part
I bought a Mayfair 148E2 000 Slow-Close Molded Wood Elongated Toilet Seat on August 2012, and installed it on a new American Standard 2887.216.020 H2Option Siphonic Dual Flush Elongated Two-Piece Toilet. Installation was simple and took all of five minutes at the most. The fit was perfect. Loved it! The slow-close toilet seat lasted until May 2015 (33 months). What broke was the molded-wood seat itself (the ring-shaped seat). It cracked across one side. I guess a 280 lb. visitor leaning to one side was just too much stress for the elongated seat to handle. Until the seat broke, it was an exceptional toilet seat. I loved the slow-close feature and not having to hear the toilet seat or lid slam onto the toilet. The quick-release clips on the hinge mechanisms were also a welcome feature. This made for easy seat removal when the toilet required a thorough cleaning. I had not had any problems with the hinges breaking as some reviewers have had. When considering a toilet-seat replacement, I decided go with the same model because other than the cracked seat, I really liked the features and the quality. I also believe in second chances. I used the existing toilet-seat mounts for the replacement toilet seat, so installation was just a matter of unsnapping the old seat from the mounts and snapping the new seat into place. That took all of 30 seconds. As for recommending this toilet seat, it's a winner. However, if you have regular visitors who weigh over 250 lbs., you may do better opting for a model with a sturdier seat. A more durable seat would be a welcomed improvement to an otherwise well-designed toilet seat; thus, the four-star rating.

This Is A Must Have Item For Us
I never realized how much we took for granted our slow close toilet lids until we purchased a brand new Kohler toilet for a bathroom renovation that did not have a slow close lid. So after a week of hearing the toilet lid slam, I bought the Mayfair slow close unit for elliptical shaped toilet bowls. The item was exactly as described in the product listing and fit the Kohler toilet perfectly. Pros: Easy to install. Should take you no more than 5 minutes to remove the old lid and replace it with the new Mayfair. Works very well. The lid closes very slowly, in fact it closes even more slowly than our Totos slow close lids. Looks like it was made for the Kohler toilet. Better quality than the Kohler lids. Kohler lids and attachment hardware are much cheaper grade. Cost - $10 cheaper than the Kohler slow close lid. Cons: The unit shipped with a missing piece used to attach the seat to the bowl. Not a big deal, I was able to use a 1/4" nut, washer and rubber grommet that I had as an alternative. Minor con is the seat is pressed wood, so you can scratch the white finish off. Not a big deal, but would have preferred a high grade plastic seat. After two weeks of use, no issues whatsoever. I would recommend this item over the Kohler lid to anyone that is looking to replace their regular Kohler lid with a slow close lid.

Plastic coated Wood NOT just plastic and it quiet closes!
Plastic coated Wood NOT just plastic and it quiet closes! It took me a while to find this one. Most are just plastic and most will slam shut (in the middle of the night, of course!). This one is great! I'm big so I will tell you that it is very solid and doesn't move. To do that, they have special hardware that you attach to your toilet. You can use tools but I did this with my bare hands and it hasn't loosened up in several months so I think it is solid? The seat is simply and easily removed from the toilet with a twist of the hinge covers and lifting it up and off the studs that remain attached. This makes thorough toilet cleaning as well as seat cleaning very straight forward. My wife likes it because it is just complicated and physically demanding enough that she can get me to remove it and, of course, then to clean the toilet!!! Listen up, ladies. These chances don't come around that often? The soft closing feature means no more sudden bangs, especially late at night! Even the price was reasonable compared to what you'd pay at big box stores for a less effective toilet seat.

(Update: not holding up well) Great toilet seat, installs easily, works silently, looks nice, appears durable
We recently remodeled our bathroom and replaced the toilet with a new Kohler. As with any busy household that includes adults and kids, there is the occasional accidental (and in some toddler-related cases, purposeful) slamming of the toilet seat and lid. This is loud and can wake the household if it occurs during the night, and can be dangerous for the toddler-slammer in question, as well. So, we wanted a quiet and slow-closing seat solution. We looked in a couple of the local big-box hardware stores (we have both major flavors, Orange and Blue), but their stock of quiet-close, elongated toilet seats consisted of cheap-looking, plastic ones. We ordered this Mayfair seat from Amazon, and are loving it so far. Installation was simple, and took less than 10 minutes from start to finish. Note that this seat closes *very* quietly and slowly. It is, for all intents and purposes, completely silent. It also looks great, and perfectly matches the white of our Kohler toilet. ************************************************************************* Update - after less than a year the white paint is already gone from parts of the edges of the toilet. This is a painted wooden seat, so the color does not go all the way through the material like with something synthetic, so now the seat has light brown edges showing through. The seat is not abused in any way, so this is disappointing. Given that it's wood I'm sure we could touch it up or repaint it, but I don't need yet another thing in my house that needs regular maintenance. When it starts to look too bad, we'll be replacing it with something made from a synthetic material. Too bad, too, because the seat looks great and the slow close feature is very nice.

Absolutely Perfect!
7/2015 This seat is fabulous! I ordered one last year for the powder room which is probably used about 30 times a day and it is still perfect. I've just ordered a second for one of the other bathrooms. I absolutely love the slow-close feature. This is so easy to install. So easy to clean. So white. So wood. So made in the USA! I'm actually thinking of making this the new Christmas gift for others. 10/2018 Well the first seat lasted 3.5 years and then it wasn't so slow closing so I contacted the manufacturer and received a quick response: "Hinges are not replaceable on molded wood seats because once the screws are removed, the screw hole can be stripped, causing the hole to not hold new screws up to our safety and warranty levels. Hinges on plastic seats are installed at the factory while the plastic is still warm using special tools. Because of this, bumpers or hinges on plastic seats cannot be replaced. Bemis Manufacturing does offer a one-year manufacturing defect warranty that is handled through the location of purchase. If your seat is less than one year from the date of purchase, you can return the seat to the store for immediate return or exchange." So, no problem, I ordered another and just installed it in a matter of 5 minutes. They are great, heavy, molded wood seats and I would not hesitate at all to reorder for the other bathroom, if need be.
