Linguistics for Everyone: An Introduction

Ordered because it was cheaper than what my school was renting it for. In good condition. I will see what other books I can rent from Amazon in the future to save money. Delivery was also fast allowing me to read because the course started 👍🏾

I find this book to be a comprehensive overview for the beginning linguistic student.That being said, I found many spelling errors and a few errors regarding the languages used. I speak Japanese and French so I noticed errors regarding a vulgar French phrase ("You're breaking my balls"-"Se casser les couilles"). The book didn't have this as a reflexive.Also, there was an error regarding counting in Japanese.These are small errors but take away from the book and, for me, detract from its legitimacy.I feel like an editor should catch these small things. That being said, I did find that it had accurate information regarding the evolution of the English language and accurate information about phonetics.All in all, the book could have been better organized and have been edited by someone who pays attention to detail.

Had to get this for a 300 level English class and I have found it very interesting. While it focuses on English it is very much about linguistics and the evolution and history of language. After reading this I feel like it will be much easier for me to learn a foreign language and I am now considering doing graduate studies in linguistics.

I am currently using this book in my Intro to Language class right now and I absolutely love it! The one complaint I have so far is that it opts to use some of its own IPA symbols instead of the standard ones which can make things confusing.

Highly recommended this book, so useful, and arrived as a new eddition.

Good introductory book. haha after I took a class where we went through this book, I transferred to another school and changed my major to linguistics. Not all the book, meaning my awesome professor had something to do with it but it did help catch my interest.

If you are studying language, humanities, or anthropology, I encourage you to have this book on hand. It was not a required text but I used it just as much as my assigned text book! My instructor is now using it, too!
