TRUE to LIFE Story
This is an amazing TRUE story of how Lewis and Clark discovered the Pacific Northwest ending up at the PACIFIC Ocean along with the help of a AWESOME Newfoundland Dog. Adults and children should enjoy reading about this historical journey.

Journal for Younger Readers of a Historical Trip
The book opens up to a map of the route taken to the Pacific Ocean and the return trips with the separate exploration routes. This book is set up with journal like excerpts for younger readers (possibly 3rd-5th grade). An Introduction, Afterword, Bibliography and Further Reading list is given as well as an Index. The book itself is 4 chapters over the 80 pages (It is NOT 32 pages per the details on this site). I was expecting more of a picture book for 32 pages like Laurence Pringle’s other “Secrets of” book series. This is a chapter book. I have yet to read it in its entirety, but the language and stories would appeal more to a sensitive reader than Gail Langer Karwoski’s “Seaman: The Dog who Explored the West with Lewis and Clark”. Her book is more of a story chapter book with excellent vocabulary and opportunities for discussion, but includes sentences like: “In the water, he was as sleek and graceful as a seal. His powerful legs stroking, Seaman swam into the mass of squirrels and caught one in his jaws. He tossed his head and jerked the squirrel’s body into the air snapping its neck.” This book instead states: “He leaped into the river and swam toward a squirrel with powerful strokes. Catching it, he quickly turned and swam back to the boat.” I hope this review helps aid you in your decision.

An ode to unsung heroes
Dog of Discovery takes an unusual perspective looking at Lewis' and Clark's expedition - a new and refreshing focus on Seaman, the faithful Newfoundland accompanying Captain Lewis. It offers many amazing, well-researched day-to-day details that tend to fall by the wayside in conventional reportages. The style is lively and easy to read, but the book is not only for youngsters. Adults will find it just as compelling and hard to put down. Highly recommended!

this was for my granddaughter
We have a Newfoundland dog so I read it . I enjoyed it . It was in journal form with just dated entries, not like a novel. The service and condition was good
