The games were basically my first real experience with good interactive storytelling. This book is another little dose of what I can't seem to get enough of. I enjoyed it very. I love the games and I love comics so...yeah. I want more games, of course, but I'd also like to see more comics like this one.

Ethan Doyle
It took me a while to finally read this. It’s an amazing story that explains what happened to Ellie before the events of the game.

A well made but somewhat dull prelude
The game The Last of Us is this epic story of a journey through a post-apocalyptic world. There's a great deal of character building and American Dreams looks to build upon that. The comic itself is well drawn and does a great job capturing the bleakness of the game, but the story itself doesn't give you a great deal. In fact, I feel as though the entire point of the comic could have been expressed in a one page short story. It does give a little bit of background to the Left Behind DLC, but nothing so significant or ground breaking that you couldn't derive it from the DLC alone. In fact, I think I'd venture so far as to say Left Behind makes American Dreams entirely unnecessary as every notable point in it is covered in the game and done so in a more engaging and intimate way. However, taken on its own, the artwork and story of the comic make it worth reading if you think the price is fair.

Very true to the game universe
I'm a huge fan of The Last Of Us video game on the PS3, and this graphic novel does a good job of keeping with the tone set by the game. Ellie is a very interesting young character and getting some more back story is a plus. My only complaint is that the graphic novel is kind of short and given that this is the first time I got to meet Ellie's friend Riley, I didn't feel like I had enough time to truly get to know and care for here. Overall, a very enjoyable read. If you are a fan of the game you will like this novel.

Great addition to The Last of Us lore!
This was so insightful and a cool fleshing out of Ellie's "The Last of Us" story. It answered some questions that I had and even some that I didn't think to ask. I also LOVED the art style. Very fitting with the art we see on cartoon media we actually see in the game itself!

Good comic, pages stuck together.
I bought this as a present for my brother, but for some reason several of the pages seem to have not been cut properly. Attempts to cut or gently tear them apart is impossible without ruining the pages. Does this happen often? I wouldn't be so upset if it were one or two, but it's like, half the book. The art and story is good, though, y'know, what little we could read. Update: received a new one and it's perfect! The story is awesome and I dig the art.

Decent, but nothing special
A decent addition to the Last of Us cannon, but nothing really special. This comic came out slightly before the game as sort of a trailer and it really shows. There is very little in terms of actual story, and the whole thing just ends abruptly with no satisfactory conclusion. For fans of the game hoping this would fill in some story gaps (as I was), this really doesn't show a whole lot. Just Ellie's relationship with Riley and her initial encounter with Marlene. On top of that, the animation is really sub-par. Characters look little like their video game forms and barely human at times. When you make a graphic novel based on a game with some of the best graphics ever used, you really owe it to your readers to provide correspondingly effective animation. There are also some continuity errors, such as a segment where Ellie is holding a gun and she switches from being right-handed to being left-handed between panels. MINOR SPOILER ALERT HERE One part of the story doesn't even make any sense. It's established early on that everyone at Ellie's boarding school has to become a soldier when they turn 16. But later on, Marlene tells Ellie he made sure she went there and wants her to stay there because that's where she'll be safe. Safe? When she turns 16, she'll be conscripted and forced to fight against the Fireflies! Why would Marlene want Ellie to stay in a place that would force her to become an enemy? END MINOR SPOILER ALERT While I liked reading this, I was still sorely disappointed that it didn't reveal more about Ellie's past or contribute much to the cannon. It's still a must-have for fans of the game, but it doesn't add much to what's already out there.

Having watched the HBO series twice was looking for more The Last of Us content. This short graphic novel delivers on all levels and captures the feel of the TV series and original game - a fantastic read. Just wish it was a little longer. Highly recommended.
