Nicely priced unit for cooling a large area.
I live in SW Colorado Springs and renting a house without A/C. The weather is very dry and hot during the day, with cooler temps at night. But 2 out of the 3 levels of this house temps during the day were reaching 86º and hotter. I did lots of research on this product and thought this was the unit that best fit our needs. My folks recently moved in with me and they are home during the day. I had to do better for them. We felt an immediate change in temperature, on the middle level where I put the unit. I have a nice lower window in the dinning room and I put the unit right in front of the open window. This floor is very open and it cools the whole floor to a nice comfortable temperature in the mid-70's. This floor is where the kitchen, dining room and family room is and where we spend most of our time. Each bedrooms are cooled by the ceiling fan along with small tabletop fan, in each room, but windows are open at night allowing comfort sleeping, as it gets into the 50's at night. The walkout basement is always cool, but is used for storage and laundry room, since it is not finished. I have been using this for 3-weeks now and have not yet had to clean it, but I am aware that I will need to soon. There was a bit of an odd smell the first day, but the odor was not bad and is not producing any odors now. We only run it in the late afternoon until it starts getting cooler in the evenings. I bought a 15' hose to fill it originally, but use a 2-gallon watering can to fill it before use each day. I have not got my first electric bill since getting the unit, but believe in the reviews that it will be economically better than the window A/C unit that the owners left for me to use. If there is a downside, I'd add that it is loud enough that the TV has to be turned up to hear it, but conversations are held at the normal level unless someone tries to talk from the kitchen to the family room, then it gets hard to hear what was said. I can say that it is a little louder than running a table fan on high. The unit has 3 settings and I need to add that we have not needed to run the unit past the first setting.

Great unit!
I was skeptical about purchasing this because of the mixed reviews, but after alot of research this unit was the best bang for my buck and covered the most square footage.....keep in mind this is NOT an a/c. It does blow very nicely cooled air, but it is a 'swamp cooler'. It works well at my store in NM....My store is about 2000 sq ft with high ceilings. I do have a small a/c unit as well, but it just hasn't been enough..I purchased this to supplement that. I would say overall I am pleased. It has worked to keep the store a tad cooler and more manageable during these hot days.... Keep in mind- IT'S LARGE!! This thing is HUGE! It's also loud....it's light though, on wheels, easy to move around. It has a constant water hook up or easily dump water through the top.... Despite what other reviews say about these not working, they do work. They just aren't as cool as actual a/c- because it's not one.

I do not know why these are not more common in the San Fernando Valley
I do not know why these are not more common in the San Fernando Valley area! My apartment is positioned over an open air garage and nothing but sky above. When it is hot outside, the apartment turns into an oven matching outside full sun temperatures. The 15,000btu AC wall unit is good for about a 7 degree temperature drop and a massive power bill. It often gets over 100 here, so 7 degrees isn't exactly helping much! So I discovered 'swamp coolers' and got this one. It uses about 1/8th the power of my AC and kicks the AC's butt around the block on cooling power. The hottest day was 113. If I had used the AC it would have been 106. Swamp cooler? 85! Very good purchase. Onto the unit itself. It's pretty large and I expected it to be a deafening roar. It was not. It's loud, but no louder than my AC and since the main noise is from the giant fan, it is a white noise and much less noticeable than the oscillating and somewhat grinding sound of AC. I cannot use the auto-fill connector so I top load the water with a giant watering can. It requires quite a bit of loading especially on hot days as it can go through 2+ gallons of water an hour. Small price to pay in my book compared to the power bill. The cooling works best when humidity is below 40% (not a problem here, we average low 20's) and really comes into it's own when it drops to the teens. The interesting bit I found was the amount it cools is relative to the outside temperature. It seems to have an equilibrium of cooling my apartment down to around 82 degrees. So, the hotter it gets, the more it evaporates water causing more cooling. Thus whether it's 90 or 110 outside, inside it's around 82. My final bit, and why it is not a 5 star review is, I'm an engineer. I build, repair, and tinker with things. This unit is all plastic and does not look repair friendly.

Cools most of my house very well
I am really impressed with my Honeywell Evaporative Cooler. As you can see in the picture, it is about 13 degrees cooler in my house compared to the outside temperature. I have several Evaporative coolers and this one is one of my favorites. PROS: 1. The fan on low is very powerful already. It is enough to cool most of my house. It cools about 1000 sqf. I don't use the higher settings as the wind is just too strong for indoors. 2. When used outdoors, it cools my 600 sqf covered patio on low setting. 3. When the temp outside goes over 90, it blows a constant 78 degrees. 4. When it reaches 100, it blows a cool 80 degrees as measured from a thermometer by the output. 5. Filling with water is done from the top of the unit. When it hits 90 and up, I add ice to the water I pour in. 6. I have window fans blowing out the humid air so I get the cooling without adding humidity. I also open windows. The heat doesn't come into the Windows because the air getting blown into the house by the cooler gets blown outwards from any open window or door. Just make sure the open window is not facing the side of the house where wind blows to your house. 7. When we cook at noon, we open the door to the garage. My garage has a whirly bird turbine on the roof which sucks the air out of the garage. It sucks the heat and humidity from the kitchen into the garage and out the roof turbine. As a result in 110 degree weather, I didn't need to use my AC. 8. It is built like a tank. It reminds me of Coleman giant cooler. Rugged and strong. 9. Meant to be left outside. It has UV protection so you can use it outdoors. 10. I open my patio sliding door and put it in front just as you see in the picture. That way I get direct air from outside and not sucking air from inside the house and increasing humidity. 11. In the evening when it is cooler outside, I switch off the Cool function and I set the fan on high to blow cold air into the house. CONS: 1. Cleaning requires that you remove screws on the back and both sides to remove all the cooling cells. I wish that it was just press button or latch. SUMMARY: I cannot say enough nice things about this. I use it even when the Relative humidity is 70%. Humidity does rise so you have to vent it out just like I did. It is built finer than my Portacool. I highly recommend it.

Very good cooler if you know how to use it
Please read the comments on this one as it is obvious that people don't understand the concept of an evaporative cooler. If you live in a humid place this WILL NOT work for you but in dry climates it is superior to an air conditioner in almost every way. We purchased this to help deal with the recent unbearable heat in the southwest. Luckily for us it is a very dry climate here so this cooler works wonders. It easily knocks 15 degrees off the warmest day and has the added benefit of helping to increase the humidity in the house (as opposed to an air conditioning unit that will dehumidify). We have been filling it about twice a day running all day long, on high during the day and low during the evening. The wheels could be a bit larger, as we move it from room to room as needed. Build quality is good, it is loud but that is very subjective. An example is that it is not possible to watch television with this cooler on high in the same room. We place it down the hall about 15 feet away and it still cools but is quiet enough to hear the TV.

An way overpriced humidifier
This is nothing more than a high speed humidifier. I have had air coolers before so I thought buying higher capacity cooler would eliminate my small room coolers. I used it when the temperature was in 80's and it worked "OK" at best. Now it is in the 90's and all it seems to do is circulate hot air. After a month I opened it to clean it (based on manufacturer recommendation), what I saw was beyond gross. This is what I found: 1) THERE IS NOTHING COOLS THE WATER IN THIS PRODUCT. I didn't expect a compressor, but there are non compressor type water cooling devices. It is a small circulating pump that sucks up the water from the bottom of the tank to the top to wet the honeycomb filter. If the room air is warm/hot and the water is cool, the circulating air will be warm. 2) After a month of constant use, the tubing was so black full of mold I couldn't tell that they were supposed to be clear. That also explained the smell. Fish tanks have better pumps and filtration systems. 3) All the tubing and wiring has plastic ties to hold it down. In order to clean the tubing they have be cut and of course replaced, which means trips to the hardware store. 4) In order to have cool air I had to buy at least a 5 pound bag (More money to spend). To put the ice in the tank I had to unscrew the back panel (5 screws) load the ice carefully and screw the panel back in place. That will give you cool air at least last for 4 hours in 90 degree weather. 5) Since it has been more than 30 days (37 days to be exact) the vender would not take it back. I have tried to contact Honeywell, for two weeks, via phone and email and have not received a response. I'm not against air coolers, I have currently have 3 small ones for the bedrooms and they work very well. This product just sucks, and now I'm stuck with it. SdR DON'T BUY IT.

Customer Service Lacking (Updated!)
I live in the desert, so evaporative coolers generally work very well here. I upgraded to this one from a KuulAire PACKA53 500 CFM Portable Evaporative Cooling Unit with 325 Square Foot Cooling Capacity, Silver , which worked well, but it wasn't really designed for cooling my whole living room / entry / kitchen area. When I received this unit I was generally impressed with the design. The louvers are easy to move and the controls are easy to understand. There is no remote to lose and I don't feel it is necessary. The fill location is on the top, and is a nice wide funnel shaped area. The water level indicator is too far inside the tank and is very difficult to see without being in bright light or having a flashlight. The plastic casing is molded well but when I took off the back to investigate an issue, I noticed the screws were just screwed directly into the soft plastic. If you remove the media regularly to change or replace, your screw holes will get stripped quickly. I might try to reinforce that area at some point. The casters are very small and don't handle bumps well, but they do have locks which was a nice touch. I bought it during the off season for a substantial discount, but the unit I received was defective. The fan worked great but the pump does not come on at all. I contacted Honeywell and left a message, but they have yet to return my call. I'll call again tomorrow. I'm wondering now how many people have tried this and decided that evaporative coolers don't work when they just have a defective unit. Normally I would just exchange this since it was DOA, but they don't have any more in stock so I'm going to try to get it repaired. I will report back with any progress, but so far I can't even get through to someone and I am less than impressed. UPDATE! After a couple of days Honeywell returned my call and they mailed a new pump to me at no charge. It is mailed from NYC area so it took about 5 days to reach me near the West Coast. I haven't had a chance to install it yet with all the holiday events, but I hope to install it within the next week and I will updated this review again with the final outcome. After installing the replacement pump, it works very well. I would prefer that they answer their phone instead of having to leave a message but it all worked out in the end. Installing the pump was about as difficult as wiring a light fixture. I only needed a phillips head screwdriver and some replacement zip ties.

BIG! COLD!
This re-boxed return(?) was too cheap to pass up with free shipping! Got home from work to find the huge box on my porch. Not really heavy, just cumbersome. Got it inside and out of the box. Felt pretty sturdy, thick plastic, low tank to keep center of gravity low. Lockers on the wheels. Simple unit with a three speed fan - if it had one more slow speed it’d be perfect. Two vertical airflow adjustments up or down and a motorized side to side directed airflow that can be shut off. It hit 88 here in Denver which means 92 ish at my house and 25% humidity so perfect time to test. It was 79 on the house thermostat and the air coming out the front of the swamp cooler dropped like mad then slowed to about 67.4, I will take that all day long! It will work out great here in my ranch style. Only 1500 sq ft up, so this unit was cooling my kitchen, eating area and ‘great room’ (I suppose) with ease, the bedrooms and bathroom, not so much. It is a bit on the loud side, turning up the volume on the surround was a sensible solution. I am sure it will work great on my back porch providing a nice ‘chill’ area. You can hook it up to a garden hose on the side too. I am am pleased with it so far. I will pop back for an update, later in the Summer when we hit triple digits.
