I typically wear an xl in standard shirts, but i want a little more room. Should i go down a size for big and tall?

Check the size chart. I normally wear an XLT, but find the Wranglers sizing a bit skimpy, however, it _is_ true to what is in the chart.

what is the depth of the pocket? can pocket hold a cell phone and button the pocket?

Depth of pocket = 5" Button x 5" wide; 6" unbutton x 5" wide. Can not hold cell phone (button).

Would this shirt work well for welders?

42 years with many welding processes, 100% cotton twill will arrest flames and USUALLY protect from burns, even dual/core wire. Users experience will make the difference. These shirts are my go-to since Duluth discontinued their all cotton twill. They lasted 11 years. Excellent UV and heat radiation shielding. My Riggs test shirt has performed flawlessly for two months. Includes thousands of hot chip hits from turning/milling processes. Just ordered 10 more tan for the warm seasons ahead.

i have 49 in waist, chest, any ideas on whats the best fit, with a little give for an undershirt please?

3XL was the size I wore when my waist size was a 44 and I had a rather large belly. I believe a 4XL should be just fine. 3XL will not give that room you want. I like wearing my shirts in my pants, if so a tall will help a lot if you also wear your shirts in your pants.

Nothing like heavyweight cotton

I’ve purchased a couple of these shirts in different colors over the years. I’m really happy to buy this latest version because I’ve lost a bunch of weight and I get to size down. Plus, I moved back home to a northern climate so now I can wear warm shirts more frequently. That’s not why I moved ~but a nice bonus. Sizing on the shirt for me is perfect. It’s a tad little bit big, which is perfect for my taste. I haven’t noticed them shrinking, but they get washed in cold water and they don’t go through a hot dryer. Material thickness is HD, and I love it. Quality is top shelf, the feel of the shirt is luxurious. Five stars all day long.

Nice Shirt

Nice shirt. Sleeves are too long. Otherwise ok. The size estimator is way off. Indicated I should order 4X long. I ordered a 2X instead. It was way too big. Sending it back and ordered an XL which is nice except for the sleeve length. 6’ tall - 252 lbs.

Can't go wrong with this comfortable yet classy work shirt.

This fits perfectly. Oh so comfortable, and well constructed. Work shirt? This one looks good enough for casual dress wear. The Navy color turned ran a little dark, almost black, but I don't mind... that was my second choice anyway.
