This is a wonderful author !!! Wonderful child books !!! Good parent share with kid books !!!!
Minn of the Mississippi, _a baby turtle -- as well as A Tree in the Trail - and Journey to the Sea are all wonderful books. We read them to our daughter as bedtime stories -- second or third grade (each probably a week to get through) Educational - as per critters, grography and history of the USA. How can one not enjoy learning how a small indian crafted boat (one foot long) finds its own way down to the sea on its own -- The great lakes connect - he even goes over Niagra Falls - for example

A Beautiful Natural History of the Mississippi River
Holling's "Minn of the Mississippi" should rank among Beston's "Outermost House," Leopold's "Sand County Almanac," and Douglas' "River of Grass" as among the greatest nature writing. This is not a typical children's story book but a complete history of the Mississippi River. You learn about the geology, hydrology, history, biology, and anthropology of this great river told from the point of view of a 3-legged snapping turtle as it moves down the river from headwaters to gulf. Only some unfortunate stereotyping in one chapter mars this gem. (Though at the time this book was written, no one would have noticed.) You will spend hours perusing the beautiful illustrations, maps, and diagrams. Holling's pencil drawings that decorate each chapter are just exquisite. Highly recommended.

Informative fiction about the mighty Mississippi
A little dated but that is part of it's charm. Historically accurate window into the history of the might Mississippi from it's source to the delta as told through the journey of a snapping turtle as it makes it's way to the Gulf of Mexico. Excellent book for kids of all ages and adults will enjoy it too.

Great book, no twaddle
I found this a difficult read but rewarding. I guess I'm used to reading lower level books but this one is rich in vocabulary and language. I thought it would be too hard as I was reading it to my daughter but she was able to excitedly tell me back what I had just read to her and has referred back to the story and title of the book often. :) Happy Mom
