Q: Can it keep fruit flies out?

I have never found any flies in the bread bin.

Q: Can you paint it if you want too

Yes, you could, with careful preparation, and under coat. Using non solvent based furniture paint... However, the roller top lid would chip in use and the food stuffs would surely get tainted. The hygienic properties of the bamboo would be compromised making it difficult to keep clean.

Yes it does come flat packed. Sliding door is very flimsy.
