A historical look at cooking with chocolate
I just downloaded this book on my kindle, mostly in response to other reviews. This is definitely NOT a book for modern cooking or baking. The historical facts on chocolate are quaint and interesting, but the measurements given (such as "gills" of water) are not common cooking terms these days. Some of the recipes call for raw egg whites that are not safe to eat, so you'd have to substitute meringue powder. I have a lot of other modern cookbooks which have updated recipes for most of the items, so if you are an experienced cook you'll recognize them right away and know how to proceed. If you are not familiar with a particular recipe, I'd recommend looking up on line and going from there.Having read it, I think that this book is a good freebie for "foodies". It seems to be an advertising tool for Walter Baker and Co. chocolate (it's mentioned continually throughout the book) but you get some insight on early 20th century kitchen practices and tastes. I probably won't try to make anything straight from this book as it's written. Just read it for a different take on history. It makes me imagine how hard my great-grandmother had to work in her kitchen!!

May Be of Interest to Foodies
This book begins with a brief history of chocolate so that may be of interest to you. Then it is mostly filled with recipes that the modern cook will have trouble with in today's times. Like for instance who measures flour by the pint? Who cooks in a moderately hot oven? If placing something over a fire, would that be a gas burner? How do you get an entire box of gelatine? Now it is sold in envelopes. What is "soluble" chocolate? I find most of the recipes sound delicious but making them would be quite the effort. First you'd need to write out the recipe again with all the ingredients listed first and the instructions after. In this book the recipes are all written in an old-fashioned style that won't be appreciated by cooks who want something fast to make. If you do read this book do it only for the pleasure that a foodie would get from reading about cooking.~The Rebecca Review

Unique
This is a digital copy of an old old cookbook. It's like the ""company" cook books of today. The original book was published in the late 1700's by The Walter coca company. Every recipe calls for that brand of chocolate product. The recipes don't have an ingredient list but by reading the recipe first one is given the measurements. Easy to substitute a current brand of chocolate. I haven't tried a recipe yet but intend to after the holidays.

Love the concept but...
I didn't read this. I just want this off my non-reviewed list. I went over my head getting books that I didn't really had the time to read. I may get it again who knows, but I doubt it. I gave it a middle rating so it won't alter good nor bad this book as I don't know if it deserves bad or good review. Sorry and thanks for understanding.

Good recipes for candy and cakes. Step by step instructions to help you easily create your own chocolate. The only thing I would
Good recipes for candy and cakes. Step by step instructions to help you easily create your own chocolate. The only thing I would recommend is that pictures and images should be added to help readers get into the recipes better. Overall, this is a perfect book to purchase, especially for who prefer fresh homemade candy. This book is worthy to get 5 stars.

Good old fashioned recipes
Good old fashioned recipes, but they all call for the same brand of chocolate that I've never seen or heard of. I may try one with a modern brand of chocolate and see how it comes out.

Yummy Chocolate...Nom Nom Nom
This book is nice to have to build your recipe collection. Nice to have when you want to make home made cocoa on that cold rainy afternoon with the kids.

Yum!
Easy to follow recipes resulting in tasty treats, what's not to like? I'm sure there are books out there with more complex recipes and that use hard to get ingredients but if you want to spend more time enjoying what you've made as opposed to spending hours tracking down the only shop in Britain that has stock of concentrated Ooba Dooba juice or whatever, you could do worse than get this book.
