Vogue® Knitting The Ultimate Stitch Dictionary: More Than 800 Stitch Patterns Review: A must have for the intermediate-level knitter! - It is always a risk buying a craft/needlework book online. You can’t flip through the pages to see if it offers what you’re looking for. I took the chance on this book, since Vogue books have proven worth the money spent. I’m NOT disappointed. I’m an intermediate knitter, and I was looking for book of various designs and knitting stitches. No garments or accessory instructions are offered in this book; rather the wide range of stitch patterns allow you to design your unique item. The directions are not in “hieroglyphics”, but do utilize some abbreviations. Very easy to comprehend. Review: Amazing resource - Beautiful book, clear pictures, texts and diagrammes, so many patterns, edgings, the best dictionary for me! If you want just one, I would pick this one.

Crochet/knitting
Back in early April, I fell (or flew) down the staircase in my home and shattered my left ankle with a high impact triple compound fracture. I was lucky that there happened to be a specialist in that sort of injury in a nearby hospital because otherwise, I could have had to suffer an amputation. I am still in a boot with a cane or walker going through physical therapy, but at least he didn't have to amputate. I've been crochet and knitting presents for my husband's family feverishly in my extended down time. This book has given me new stitches and ideas to use and has literally saved me throughout this unpleasant obstacle in my life!

So many pattern choices from beginner to expert
Others complained about the picture being hard to see and the print was too small. I think the pics are great. There were a few that could have been from a lighter yarn to see the stich definition. The patterns and charts are good, unless you have poor eyesight. It's a big book and I'll print out the pages I need so I don't have to carry this book. Overall, a very nice book. Especially for the discount price.

Patterns to incorporate with written patterns by others
I thought the book would include actual item patterns, start to finish. However, it offers a multitude of square samples of patterns, including lace, intarsia (colorwork), and cables. If you have a pattern already for a sweater, you can incorporate any of these designs into the sweater. Otherwise, you will have to find a pattern for a sweater.

If you can’t find it here, it doesn’t exist. Well, that’s not true at all. It’s just such a huge volume. It’s amazingly heavy, the pages are so thick, it’s extraordinarily hard to look at, the pictures are colourful, but the definition of the stitches sometimes barely have enough contrast to clearly see them properly.. it is a beautiful book. But it’s just so much. Maybe a little economy would have helped it to be more practical, at least for me, one who doesn’t feel like lugging a massive book to my table, clearing off everything to make room for it, and spend an inordinate amount of time trying to find things that might work for me. Yes, it has a lot of great stuff, don’t get me wrong, and it’s very well defined, what is there, but it’s hard to find. One must flip over and over and over, thick page after thick page, to look at the pictures, to sort out what it is I’m looking at, and then if it will suit my purposes.. and then mark them with a sticky note. Other than four or five different sections, it’s not organized otherwise. And yes, there is a glossary, but I’m not going to remember the name of the Vogue stitch.. In the Edging section, there are many, many different edgings, some of them are new but a lot of them are ancient, and found in the antique books, and they’ve reconfigured them but they don’t clearly mention how to pick up the stitches to knit them on, to uhh, the cast-off hem? It’s unclear. I suppose that’s what they mean. There is a small disclaimer in that section which says if there’s anything you need help with, then go ahead and buy the companion book, the Vogue book of knitting and everything is in there, and then it lists all the sections one could ever want to learn about.. but it doesn’t mention how to assemble edgings. Well, I do know a few techniques, knitting them on as you cast off your original hem, as well as picking up as you go from a cast off edge. It’s not that I’m particularly stumped.. it’s just that it doesn’t say clearly in the book what one should do. Which is amazing.. because everything else seems to be spelled out. For that matter, all the patterns are well defined, and all of them have nice charts too. I haven’t tried to knit any, but I do know from experience what to look for, and they seem good. They have the repeat rows and stitches numbered, though they don’t have any definition for how to cast off the edges for the pretty laces which show the cast off edge in the picture, which would probably take a bit of wrangling, and perhaps more than a little finesse for the experienced knitter.. I would expect a beginner would run for the hills. Hmm.. Did I say it’s a pretty book? It is. For over $50. It’s a nice huge book, if it had finer paper, and more attention to the quality of the knitting and contrast in the pictures, and more attention to content, for this day and age when everyone who is experienced is looking to design and use these to augment their skills, this is a bit of a letdown. But, I’ll keep it and probably refer to it, in addition to others Ive got in my little library. Love. ❤️
