Loud, high pitch, cheap
I have been trying to find a good whistle for Refereeing swim meets. I found that the cheap metal whistles have a bad taste and require too much air to be loud. We blow a lot of prolonged whistles and it tires you out using too much air. I got 3 whistles to compare and replace my cheapo whistles: The Acme Thunderer 60.5: Low airflow, loud without hurting my ears. Does not taste like metal. Classy look with a nice sound. This is my go-to whistle now. Fox 40 Classic Safety Whistle: Low airflow, loud and shrill. Low cost. I prefer the Thunderer sound a bit more, this is my backup. Acme T2000 Tornado: High airflow, too loud and too shrill. You can't blow it softly, it only makes a sound when you blow hard.

Great safety whistle for kayaks/small non-motorized boats
I can't understand how there are so many 1-star reviews for these, unless some are defective. I tried it out with 1 quick toot inside the house, and it made my ears ring - and I didn't blow nearly as hard as I could. It makes a shrill sound that carries very well over water. Mine is lightweight but seems sturdy. It's also nice and small, so it's not in the way on my life jacket. About to pick up 2 more for my buddies. If you get one that doesn't work properly, just send it back. I'll edit this if there's any issue after a year of fishing, but I doubt there will be.

The Loudest Whistle I have Ever Used! It Will Get Your Attention!
This has got to be the loudest whistle I have ever used. WAY better than your typical whistle one would buy at a sports store or at your big box retail store. First time I tried this whistle was out in my front yard and I felt the loud SPL from it in my ears. The manufacturer says one can get SPL's at around 115 db and I truly believe that. NOW I am getting a bit louder because of the strong lungs I have. As a sound engineer and a DJ, working in that field for over 30 years, outside my day to day driving job, I am pretty good at estimating how loud different sounds can get and with this whistle, I get whistles from this around 120 to 125 db. My original intention on buying this whistle was to use it for work. After I had lost my transportation job out of Tampa Int. Airport, and started a new one as a school bus driver, I needed something loud enough to get the students attention when needing to talk to them about anything if they won’t respond to my already loud voice. This whistle gets their attention REALLY fast and gets them to quiet down in a timely matter when needing to address them. *NOISY SCHOOL BUS* A quick sharp couple of bursts on this whistle and the students are quiet. That FAST! But the use of this on the school bus is not the only thing I use this whistle for. I own a 20 ft flats boat that has no horn and to keep buying airhorn cans can be costly especially if you use them frequently. The Coast Guard Regulations states I have to have some sort of sound emitting device on my boat and a whistle is an approved choice. This is plenty loud enough to be able to signal your actions while piloting a vessel. For the price and its intended use, this is definitely a great purchase for my needs. Hey… if the NFL uses this type of whistles by the Refs… It has to be a good product.

I love this whistle!
This whistle works great and it’s very compact! The size is very easy to grip and it’s hard to lose this whistle due to the bright color. I normally lose my whistles but so far so good with this whistle! The weight is fantastic!

Probably the best and most dependable whistle you can buy.
I got my first Fox 40 whistle back in the mid 1990's when I was a rugby referee. You never had to worry about the pea getting stuck and not work. (Read the history of why it was invented.) It would just always work, and you know you would be heard. Well, I gave that whistle to someone decades ago, and now I needed to get another one for coaching my grandson's football team. (Where did the time go?) I knew that there was only one choice for a whistle, and I was glad to find that they were still being made. This will probably never wear out. I am more likely to lose it than anything else! I am so glad that they're still available and I was able to get one.
