Three items work together well—the hood, the cap and the string
I bought both 55-mm (for Contax RTS) and 49-mm lens hoods (for Pentax KM) and this review is written for Pentax camera. The solid metal hood (0.6 oz) fits my vintage 50-mm manual prime lens well (filter size 49-mm) and the center pinch cap (0.4 oz) sits on the hood nicely due to the cap-receiving groove inside the front end of the hood. The original lens cap can be stored away as long as the hood and the hood cap stay on the camera. The cap does not allow the light coming through the lens so that it helps certain vintage manual cameras (e.g. Pentax KM camera) to prevent the camera battery drainage issue that occurs when the cap is not on. The black string (12 inches or longer depending on the hood size) that came with the cap is for keeping the hood cap to be attached to the camera strap ring so that we don’t lose it when it is taken off the hood. The way I use it is as follows (see the pictures): (1) Fold the string into a loop shape and tie the two loose ends first. (2) Pass the loop end through the cap hole situated at one side of the cap margin starting from the front side of the hole and pass the tied end through it... (3) Likewise, pass the tied end through the camera strap ring on the body and pull it further out to make a loop large enough to receive the cap through it. By doing so, when the string is not needed it can be easily freed from the cap or the strap ring by reversing the looping action.

It gets the job done
This lens hood is fine for my 40mm Nikon lens. It feels solid enough, although the cap seems pretty no-frills. Granted, at this price, I don't expect more. Since the front of the lens hood is 58mm and the front of the lens is 52mm, the replacement cap is needed. But this stands out so much as a no-frills bit that I ordered a 58mm Nikon cap to pop on the hood. With all of that said, it gets the job done, preventing flare from off-center light sources and protecting the front element, and it comes at a very good price!

Durable and quality metal
Haven't had this long to give an in depth review but so far I am very pleased with the quality of the metal and durability. One thing to know is that this won't work with any wide angle lenses as you'll introduce heavy vignetting. It worked well with my DJI 50mm drone lens. Wider than that is unusable. But that's just how it goes with all lens hoods! Thankfully, there are other wide angle specific lens hoods that are metal out there.

Well made with limitations.
I bought this to replace the flared Nikon lens hood which has become prone to popping off (plastic). The lens hood is well made and functions as expected. From a practical standpoint, the straight-sided hood blocks the corners of the image when shooting with no or little zoom. It's generally not an issue for me as I am usually capturing birds or other nature items. It would be perfect with a small taper to open the full image range, but it is well made and protects my lens. I would buy again.

Does the job perfectly
Not much to say here since it's basically just a metal tube, but it seems to be well built. I bought it to keep glare off my Pentax 35mm F/2.4 lens, which it does well. No vignetting has been noticed. It screws on to the front of the lens and then the lens cap goes over it. Beware though, as the lens cap you'll need is NOT 49mm - the threads on the end are I think 58mm (but I don't have it in front of me as I write this, so I'm not 100% certain). It's nice that you can put filters on the end of this - can't do that with a tulip petal lens hood! That said, I don't currently have a filter on it, which is unusual for me. I typically put a UV filter on all my lenses mostly for protection. But in this case, the hood itself offers some protection, so it doesn't seem quite as important to put on a protective filter. For the moment at least I'll leave it that way because every piece of glass you add degrades the image quality. Anyway, it's a very useful accessory. Not that I care, but it's worth mentioning how ironic it is that some of the best lenses (wider primes) make your camera (and you) look like a weenie because they are small. :-) If you care about such things, this tube will make your lens/camera look more substantial and cool!

It’s great. Adds a stylish look to the lens

Quality materials, matte black inside to prevent reflections, 49mm white text is on the bottom part of the hood so you don't see it when using it. It's thick enough that it shouldn't bend.

Great price for a metal lens hood, works perfectly would definitely recommend and is considerably cheaper than brand names.
