You don't have to turn it off but you can to save battery life. To turn it off turn it over, there is an on/off switch on the bottom of the mouse,

It's approx. 3 7/8" long by 2 1/4" (approximate because it is an irregular shape, and should be no more than a 1/16" off) Should do the trick for you. I use it for my laptop and love it! I hope this helps :)
