I’ve been using this digital meat thermometer for a few weeks, and it’s become an essential tool in my kitchen. On the plus side, it provides a very fast, accurate reading. On the minus, it is very flimsy. The top lids can easily be yanked off when pulling out. This will pull the wires and seriously test your soldering skills as the wires are very thin and the space is limited. Holding the thermometer between index and middle finger at the base will prevent damage. In my household, the repeat offender who shall not be named is not allowed to handle it anymore as I have reached my psychological limit of 4 repairs. I wish Taylor would add a locking mechanism, maybe a quarter twist? Or maybe this is planned obsolescence.

I've now owned this for 7 years, I still use it all the time -- amazing value! In all that time I've only had to change the batteries 3 times (so my worries about its power switch arrangement were unfounded.) The one slight issue I've experienced was accidentally switching it from Fahrenheit to Celsius without noticing. I absolutely desiccated a turkey trying to get its temp up to 170 C (which I don't think is possible, short of setting it on fire.) If you use Celsius mode this mistake is impossible, the Celsius value at which you expect meat to be fully cooked, is barely room temperature in Fahrenheit. But if you're used to Fahrenheit, accidentally switching modes but failing to notice easily lead you to badly over-cooking your meat. (Really it's hard to call this a problem with the device, more of a stupid user trick.) ----------------------------------------------------- original review ----------------------------------------------------- This thermometer works well, it reads fairly quickly, and it has given me no reason to question it's accuracy. But for whatever reason, in a world of electronic devices with momentary on switches and time-out features, this one has a single-throw lever switch. On is on, and off is off, with no embedded idle-detect program in between. To compound this it's fairly easy to turn it on accidentally, however, in its defense, the first battery is still going strong, despite my having inadvertently left it powered-on in a drawer for days on end. I should also note that it came with an extra battery, so at this time the power arrangement is a non-issue for me... it's just a little different than many things of this nature. Addendum: It's now 4 1/2 years later, I use this all the time, I've had to buy batteries for it once. Still very pleased.

Worst design ever. This is so fragile. The first one I received was pulled apart in the packaging. The second one came apart in the same way after only a few uses. The plastic part splits open so easily, and the wires all come apart. I would not recommend this to anyone.

Would definitely recommend. Have purchased many other complicated thermometers but this is the way to go. Turn it on, switch to what mode you want and measure the temperature.
