Vitalogy (Applewood Books)

My herbalist wife loved it, best Christmas gift of 2021.

I don’t think this is the full book, but it’s still pretty incredible for the price. A must for Pearl Jam fans.

Great old fashioned look into old observations on how one should act.

I have just recently developed an interest in Herbs and healing. I find this book very interesting.

I have a 1904 edition of the original full version. It was handed down through my family. What concerns me is that it was probably taken quite seriously by my great grandparents, who probably were given it as a wedding present. I particularly like the photos of the kind of women to marry versus not marry (in the original edition). The one not to marry looks a lot more fun and interesting. The marrying one has a big square jaw and carries some extra pounds (good for childbirth, maybe?). I got this book out recently and my 21 year old son was fascinated by it because it's a snapshot of what snake-oil salesmen must have promoted back before the days when the internet was available to blow apart the myths and urban legends. Great fun to read.

I have a very fragile 1900 edition of Vitalogy and it's unfortunate that it is so old because it's great fun to look at. I used to look at it as a kid and marvel at the strange admonitions it contains, such as warning against chewing gum since spitting your saliva is hazardous to your health. Of course, I don't know of many people that chew gum and spit saliva at the same time, but it's pretty fun stuff to read. There's also the warning against marrying someone with narrow nostrils, as it "indicates small lungs." How about "Red whiskered men should marry brunettes, but not blondes, the color of the whiskers being more determinate of the temperament than the hair"? There are all kinds of remedies offered including the prevention of baldness (use French or German green soap--whatever that is). Definitely a book for the coffee table.

Ne avevo comprato una copia su e-bay e la copertina era ruvida e in rilievo come quelle del cd originale, dentro le prime immagini erano a colori e sagomate. Questa versione allo stesso prezzo non ha il fascino dell'altra. La copertina è lucida e dentro tutto in bianco e nero le pagine sono lucide e lisce, sembra il depliant di un albergo. Mi dispiace, non so se lo terrò.

Fun little book, it works well as a conversation-starter.
