I normally use only Maldon sea salt but saw this on TV so thought I would try it. Maldon has a soft, almost sweet taste but this Blackthorn is sharp, slightly acrid and bordering on chemically tangy. To me it tastes like table salt but in crystal form, but that’s the taste I tried to get away from by changing to Maldon years ago. It’s three times the price of Maldon so I expected something even more pleasant than Maldon. I was very surprised at the taste but it’s so strong you wouldn’t use much to season a meal. The Blackthorn process involved is impressive but I thought it would impart an extra something to warrant the palaver, and the very high price.

Saw a documentary about how this salt is made and bought some as gifts for my gourmand family. It has a mild salt flavour and tastes good
