It was a toss up
I was torn between the Penn and the Daiwa BG, both 4000 models. I did a lot of research, and I already own a BG 4000, but I needed a second for a trip to Costa Rica. Everyone was pushing me to the BG, but I bought the Penn because it is over 2oz lighter, its main gear is machined brass, and it is machined CNC metal. Will all this make a difference? Will it fish better? I don't know. The price point is the same, you can't go wrong with either.

So far, so great
My Penn Slammer is ancient and still works just fine. This dawned on me after buying Shimano, Daiwa and other brands of reels. There’s no need to deviate - Penn is tops for saltwater fishing. The Battle feels built like a Penn - solid, sturdy - but is so much smoother and lighter than what I expected. I’ve pulled in a fair share of stripers with it so far without any challenges. I expect it’ll last just as long as my trusty Slammer. Great reel.

A good quality salt water reel.
I've own Penn reels ever since I could afford them. They have always delivered without a hitch. Only four stars because the retrieval ratio on this model was too fast for my type of fishing. I could have gotten the slower ratio, but wanted to try this one instead. When I got the reel, there were actually two of them in the box. I thought "Wow, the great price included two reels which made me very happy. But then I thought to myself: How can they make money by giving these things away? So I contacted Amazon, and sure enough. The price was for one reel, and they did not know that they were sending out two of them with each order. So I asked how I can return one. They said just take it down to the UPS store and tell them it is a return, They'll handle it from there. Sounds easy, doesn't it? Well.......... I live on Molokai. If you've never heard of this place, don't feel bad cause hardly anyone has. With that being said. There is no UPS store anywhere on the island. Can I just mail it to you guys? I asked. They didn't know what to say and told me that they would get bak to me later........... They finally did. Probably after looking at Google earth to see of I was telling the truth. anyway, I was finally able to return the reel after they emailed me a link to print out an RMA. If you do shore casting in Hawaii (We call it whipping over here), get the one with the slower retrieval ratio. You can always crank like hell if needed.
