At first I was stumped as to how I could advance the product up the opening. There is no way to turn the base or other. I finally pulled off the brush, pushed a stick into the bottom and forcefully pushed the crayon part up. It was hard to do. THEN I saw a video that showed you should actually sharpen the plastic top of the pencil with a good pencil sharpener. Go slowly. It does work. There is a whole lot more crayon in there! Aside from that, I love the product. Goes on easy, covers blank spots nicely and last a very long time long time. I have even been able to rush out a few mornings with it still looking OK. I do think Maybelline should provide better instructions! I almost threw it away though I loved the look simply from frustration.

I've used this product for some time now, and will likely keep using it until something comes along without the following downsides: It's fairly smudge proof and long lasting; but summer temps, oily skin, and perspiration can affect application and it's durability. The tip is fairly soft and can break or misshapen with pressure; which requires more sharpening. (Other companies with soft lead pencils recommend keeping them firm in the refrigerator for sharpening and application; but would many users do this?) For me the light blonde seems too pale; but "blonde" does tend to be quite dark. My biggest complaint is that the pencil itself is very short, and a good part of the end can't be sharpened. The tough outer skin often makes it difficult to twist in the sharpener. One of the reasons for length, is that this pencil....and others on the market....have an added brow brushes to their pencils: which make the pencils appear longer, and users need to replace their brow pencils more often. This product works well with thin or sparse brows, and doesn't require a brush, however; users can use a reusable brow brush, as they do with other make-up tools. We're paying quite a bit for a very short brow pencil, with attached brushes that end up in landfills: a huge waste and expense. The longevity of the pencil color is it's biggest plus. It does tend to dry and flake away when it gets to the end of it's wear time.

Excellent product & price

Initially I LOVED this eyebrow pencil. It goes on smoothly (although very dark- even the light blonde is dark), and stays on better than any product I have ever used. Brushing through the brow makes a very natural looking eyebrow. The issues are with the sharpening. The product is soft so putting into a pencil sharpener does not work well and a lot of product is wasted. The edges of the pencil are sharp, so you absolutely have to sharpen the end or you'll scratch yourself when trying to apply it. When the length gets smaller with use, there is no way to sharpen the pencil because it's too small to fit in a sharpener and hold on to at the same time. The manufacturer needs to make it so you can turn the base to get the product to come out the top or maybe have a string to pull that exposes more of the top like the old grease pencils. Then I would give it 5 stars!

These pencils are great but I have to say that the consistency is not the same on all of the colors, at least on the five colors that I tried. Thank goodness for Amazon's return policy, like the good old drugstore days but much easier :-) as far as the shades go, I tried three blond Shades and I returned two of them. This information will help you if you are trying to choose which of the three blonde shades! The light blonde is the one that I kept, it isn't so much lighter than the others but it is an ash blond, very natural-looking. That pencil is nice and hard and draws very tiny hairs oh, I like it. Very smear proof and waterproof, as all of the colors that I tried were. I did return the blond color, it was a horrible shade of yellow, almost like tobacco juice in an old guy's beard. Sorry that's the first thing I thought of though. If that matches your hair, you need a purple toner :-) I did also return dark blonde, that shade is red. It's not bad, it's just red. Definitely not for an ash blond. Of these three colors, the light blond and dark blond were hard in consistency, making it easy to draw fine natural looking hairs. But the blonde was a smeary mess. A smeary yellow mess in my opinion. I also tried the ash brown, for a darker tone Oh, and I really like it. It is Ash Brown, very hard consistency draws nice natural looking hairs. I also tried taupe oh, and I kept that one too it was a nice in between the ash brown and the light blond, I consider it a natural ashy tone. In the picture the column to the right with five horizontal lines, is this product, top to bottom, Ash Brown, taupe, light blond, blond, and dark blond. Ignore the two next to them, to the left, unless you are interested, that is Maybelline Tattoo Studio the other long-wearing smear proof waterproof eyebrow pencil that I tried. Also very good but much softer consistency if you want to shape your brows a little bit with it almost like a Pomade pencil. They are lined up with the same name pencil in the L'Oreal, the top one of those two being light blond, the bottom of the two being blond. I like them both, nice natural color. Also long-wearing smear proof and waterproof from what I can tell. I would really like to be a beauty product reviewer if anyone is interested :-) thank you :-)

I ordered Soft brown (if you have light hair colour and medium brown brow then buy the soft brown) the medium brown is dark for me, not too bad but I prefer the soft brown. It's a long wear at least I tried it for more than 6 hours. The only problem is when you need a sharpener, it won't last... overall I love it!.
