I don't know from personal experience because I bought the 50 pieces, but according to the pitch, 50 pieces are 50 colors and 100 pieces are 100 colors.

Does not say on package, these are 100% silk made threads from china

yes, sort of a mess when they arrived. They can be untangled with a fair amount of patience and a realization that it may take a while to unravel how they were gathered in a bunch as well as wound as a skein in the first place. However, the colors are both vibrant and subtle in nature.
