I’d guess that it’s more than adequate as a flooring beneath gym equipment or for a work out mat. It’s pretty tough.

Q: Is this smooth on the underside?

Yes one side has a smooth surface while the other has the pattern ridges

Q: Can you draw in marker on the tiles? I want to make a giant board game using something like this if it will work.

Yes you can but i recommend permanent markers x
