This is rather large, essentially identical to a standard sized coffee cup in its footprint. To me that is great because it will hold large pens,SHARPIE markers, scissors, letter openers and many other desk widgets. Up to six in all. It also has some decent weight so it won't tip easily. The finish and build quality is quite good. It has a slight faux patina. I like it, but be aware that it exists. It is made to resemble the cylinder in a rather large revolver, but loaded with pens that illusion is far less so if you are anti gun this shouldn't bother you too much. I have a rather large collection of quasi exotic WATERMAN/CROSS/MONT BLANC fountain pens, roller balls, mechanical pencils and ball points and two of these allows me to keep all my favorites close at hand and to have immediate access to many ink colors. I gave this 5 stars, but wish I could do 4.5. The only issue that I have with it is the bare metal bottom. Having a mahogany desk I don't like things which might scratch. For this reason I keep a package of little rubber stick on feet from LOWES in a desk drawer so it is an easy and inexpensive fix ... but a tiny piece of factory felt would also have been nice.

This pen holder is great quality and has some heft to it which really surprised me. It doesn't fit many pens in it though, so I mostly use it for my "good" pens. Love this thing so much and it looks awesome on my desk.

Comparing it to a competitor here on amazon, that is making the same basic size... Finally have both of them side by side. I wanted another one cause it has more hole and a larger open hole in the middle. But it only comes in black, and some customers have received them with chips, so wanted silver, or raw.. So any color you want, so long as it's black. The competitor was about the same price as this one, but in the end it's a tad shorter and a little narrower in OD. This one is a tad taller, wider, and doesn't have a center hole but it's center looks somewhat like that of a real revolver cylinder, and has 2 less holes.. the competitor has "6" holes , as in typical revolver capacity along with the simulated center "pin". And comes in black or silver (raw). The competitor has 9 hole cylinder (8 outer +1 larger one in the middle) is far lighter (well duh, more holes and a larger center hole, less mass is left) , and for pens its fine. And it's a tad shorter too and a tad smaller in OD. So get something top heavy, like scissors or calibers ( typical 6" that are about 8" in total length), and it feels as if it'll go over. So would stick with short scissors and just pens, or letter opener / stable remover. Shorter or lighter items in this 9 hole cylinder. I have calipers I wanted to use in these holders, and they do not fit in the outer 8 holes, only the far larger center hole. and they lean a lot, giving that feeling this 9 hole cylinder tip over. The 9 hole cylinder came in a thin soft velvet style bag, in a plastic bag, in a plastic amazon shipper envelope. I can see how they can get possibly chipped. This 6 hole cylinder, just barely accepts my calipers, so they are kept totally up right, helping in no fear of tipping over along with it's added weight and slighter wider OD. And mine came in a box, bit better protected imho. But being in the raw, no fear of a finish chip. I do like them both. So I'll keep both, but this 9 hole cylinder will be for pens/pencils only, or hobby knifes or small scissors. And the 6 hole competitor will keep mechanical pencils and my two 6" calipers that live in my desk.

Well made. Great gift for firearms enthusiast. Drill holes are large enough for a larger size writing pen. Although, I would not put high quality pens in the holder due to metal on metal. Substantial size pen holder. Husband really thought it was a clever gift.

I write reviews regularly and I don't give anything 5-stars unless I love it, and this was really close to getting 5-stars but I need it to have some sort of grip or surface pad on the bottom. Still, I understand why it doesn't have one in case you want to lay it down horizontally. Either way, it is solid and as heavy as a paperweight should be. It leaves nothing to the imagination of what it is - a gun cylinder. I read the other reviews and my cylinder had no sharp edges, no scratches or dents, black paint is not chipped, and it is just one "BAD" piece of art! I mean what a great idea? When I began my search for a pen holder I did not expect to see this and I was nervous about the size, weight, and the condition that it would be in when I received it. Let me tell you, you will not be disappointed! A great gift for a gun lover, hunter, or sportsman/woman. Buy two if you are one yourself, because you will surely be jealous of the gift if you don't have one of your own!

Saw one at a gun shop counter, found out the owner's family bought it for him as a gift. Went home and ordered my own. Notice that many of the others here on Amazon are goofy little odd looking buggers. This is the right one. Solid cast aluminum, esthetically pleasing, really looks like a huge revolver cylinder, holds markers too. Just warms my heart to behold it.

I have a love of vintage fountain pens, much preferring them to ballpoints. The pen holder fulfills its purpose superbly and to protect the bases of my fountain pens I have inserted a couple of 19mm felt pads into each compartment. I would have no hesitation in recommending this pen holder to anyone.
