Q: Is it practical to carry the htp.xw while hiking, if one is curious about air pressure changes? does it feed real time data to iphone and-or android?

Hi! We have a number of hikers who have told us about using the sensor this way. One of them took it to the summit of Denali. The sensor takes a reading once per minute and can update your phone automatically while in Bluetooth range provided the app is allowed to run in the background.

You can change the batteries yourself. They use CR2477 model batteries.

Q: Can this be mounted outside ?

I have been using one outdoors in the UK for 6 months or more, hung by a string against a shed wall, in a spot which is usually sheltered and shaded but gets direct sun early afternoon for an hour at most. It has been very dry here all year, certainly no extended periods of driving rain to wet the device repeatedly or subject it to multiple freeze-thaw events. Bleaching of the plastic case by UV strikes me as the greatest concern here. The sensor has worked just fine under these conditions. I've no idea how it would hold out unprotected in conditions of persistent rain, or extended periods below freezing. Overall I'm very satisfied with the product. The app is easy to use, and quickly gives me the information I want.

Q: Why is this sensor three times the price it was in 2019 (£32)?

I suspect you are comparing this one, which is made in USA, is very accurate, water resistant, and includes a barometric pressure sensor with the original version which is none of those things (made in China). They are out of stock at Amazon for the Chinese version.
