First of all, I’m thrilled to have this amazing book in my library. Bonny Snowden’s work in colored pencil is world-renowned and to finally have a book written by her in my hands is an absolute treat. The book is very well thought out and meticulous in its instruction. The explanation of materials needed for colored pencil art is detailed in description and use - an invaluable resource to have at your fingertips. There is a lovely variety of subjects to draw and, notably, on a variety of surfaces — which is something rarely found in other instruction books on colored pencils. I’m starting with the first project of the kitten reaching for the ornament and, hopefully, will finish it for this year’s holiday cards and I will update my review with a photo when I finish. And then onto that amazing, colorful peacock on drafting film! Feathers! So many new techniques to explore make colored pencil exciting. I take issue with some of the previous reviews that a few of the photos in the book are dark. I believe that some of the reviewers are use to seeing Bonny’s art from a computer screen and, of course, the printed page will never look the same as an image that is back-lit on a computer screen. Colored pencil works are hard to photograph and, as a graphic designer, I’m aware that printing rarely reveals the true nature of any art. Don’t let that stop you from purchasing this gem and enjoying the step by step tutorials. Bonny Snowden has spent years developing her techniques and methods and is well-known for sharing her talents generously through her online Academy and various social media sites. To have this book is like icing on the cake - absolutely delicious!

I discovered Bonnie Snowdens art on Pinterest, mini videos and followed her feed of pencil portraits of dogs, cats, woodland creatures and of course my favorite the horses. 🐎 It is always fascinating to see exquisite creations by 👩‍🎨 . Mrs Snowden’s sensitive observation and gifted ability to create beyond lifeline pencil sketches into timeless hyper -realistic portraits compels me to believe in knowing the animal in question intimately. Her depiction forms an unspoken language; You can feel the animals soul through her depiction of their eyes. It’s amazing. 🤩 Cue forward a month later an impromptu Amazon search, I found Mrs Snowdens highly addictive art technique book instructing the skills of color pencil sketch to full portraits. As an artist myself I had to purchase and read Mrs Snowden’s inspirational technique book. I look forward to more work from this astonishing artist. Thus book is a must for artists working in color pencil ✏️ and sketching animals. This is a master class in a richly illustrated paperback art book. The pictures stand alone as a great browsing book if you’re a fan of real art. Thus would be an excellent gift for your budding artistic friends and family or an established artist seeking new techniques.

I put it my art library for reference

I have been following Bonny Snowdon for a couple years, and she is far and away the best colored pencil art teacher I have had the pleasure of learning from. This book is full of very useful content and instruction to help any aspiring artist begin drawing realistic animals. It is well organized and easy to understand. A few of the large photos do fall within the crease of the book, but I do not find that a problem as there are plenty of photos for each lesson to view. Follow the written content and I think you will be thrilled with the results.

I am a colored pencil artist and LOVE this book..the steps and step photos are so helpful in seeing how this artist/author achieves such realism in creating animals in colored pencil! I know the artist and her work is excellent...each step is clearly defined and explained! Have both in print and digital versions! GREAT reference book to do this kind of art! only sad part...the PUBLISHER has no idea how to use great photos of the artists work in a book and they have dulled the visibility of a few of the darker background pieces by not including the brightness and color correctly..it is definitely NOT the artists fault who obviously had no say in proofing the final product! but nonetheless less it is an excellent book in realism creation of colored pencils!

I agree with the review which notes how dark the photos are. I think the actual tutorials would be most helpful if done on a light background, as the strokes would be easier to see as one follows along. The non-tutorial photos in the beginning are easy to see details, however the horse and two labradors are too dark to see clearly. I would have liked more tutorials on lighter paper, rather than 2 long tutorials on drafting film and the dark labradors and horse. Her work is beautiful, however, I am a bit disappointed as I’ve been waiting quite awhile for it to arrive since ordering.

I love this book. As an admirer of Bonny Snowdons work I couldn't wait for it to be released. The book it's self lives up to all my expectations and is full to the brim with information, instruction, hints and tips on how to improve my own art work. The only disappointment was in Amazon's lack of care in packing this for delivery. It arrived in an unsealed envelope with bits of the cardboard envelope glued to the front of the book and bent corners. I did applaud the delivery driver for not losing the book in the back of their van. Thankfully the damage does not impact the joy I get from reading the book.

There are many images that appear dark overall, and I don't think it's simply a printing issue. I wonder about the choice of drawing a dark-colored dog on dark-colored paper. While this may be very informative for those who work with Pastelmat, it’s not as helpful for someone like me who works on watercolour paper. Although the cat drawing is done on watercolour paper, it falls short compared to the artist’s other works. I believe the pieces this artist created on Pastelmat are truly outstanding.
