It comes with a protective piece of plastic that goes over the machined edge when not in use.

Q: Is this hardened steel?

Do not buy this product, I bought one and it was not straight at all.

Q: What is the quality of this straight edge?

The quality of the straight edge is very good, it is protected by a plastic cover. However the other edge was damaged in shipping. The packaging for shipping was poor. Mine is usable and accurate on the critical edge.
