The Beauty of Horror 1: A GOREgeous Coloring Book

I purchased The Beauty of Horror I coloring book because Halloween and other horror-type coloring books are by far my favorite. Based on positive reviews and the really cool video the publisher put out to promote it, I was seriously excited, to say the least. The book has a sturdy cover with a - get this- dust jacket! There are images to color on the inside of the jacket AND on the inside of the book’s cover. Each page is printed evenly (no wonky misprinted images) on quality heavy stock paper that does not allow bleed-through nor pressure marks (I press so hard, it looks like I’m mad at the picture). I used Prismacolor Premier pencils with ease as the paper is so smooth there is no worry about having to burnish to get the color into nooks and crannies. It also takes the blender pencil well and does an amazing job of allowing my eraser to work properly without tearing the page. As for the images themselves, to put it simply, they are works of art. Mr. Roberts is creative and talented, so much so that this coloring book has held my interest to the point of WANTING to color every page, unlike most where there’s only 4 or 5 that I care to spend my time on. Additionally, there is an excellent balance of white space, and unlike some other horror coloring books, it isn’t laden with so much black that there’s no point in adding any color to it. Rather, each image, while perfectly rendered in its own rite, invites and graciously allows the colorer to contribute their own creative voice...to make it your own, if you will. My only wish is that the pages were one-sided and perforated. I understand there is a Beauty of Horror Ultimate Nightmare book coming out that features frameable pages, so hopefully that means they will at least be one-sided. By the way, the images I included with this review show pages I have started but not yet completed. This is how I color, but was so impressed with my experience so far, I didn’t want to wait until each page was finished to share.

This book is filled with so many wonderful nightmare creations that it makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck. I'm a big horror fan and just love the Beauty of Horror books that I have already. I can't wait to sink my teeth into volumes 3 thru 5. If they are just half as good as one and II it will be absolutely delicious. If you are a fan of horror and have not ventured into the Beauty of Horror world, by all means, take the leap the art is perfect for beginners to expert so don't be afraid just sit back and color till your hearts content. I've posted a few of my pics from the book I do have only one complaint. That is the pictures are double sided so you have to be careful what kind of coloring media you use. you can use gel pens but you have to color with a light touch or it will show through on the back side. Color pencils are your best bet to prevent from ruining any of the pictures.

I would very happily give this book 5 stars if the pages were single-sided. As it is, with the pages being double-sided, it seriously limits the media in which I can work.

This is an awesome coloring book! The images are very crisp and detailed, and the pages themselves are thick so the pens/markers I've used haven't bled through. While some pictures are simpler than others, most are quite intricate and can keep you entertained for hours at a time. Personally, I prefer doing 'art therapy' with coloring books that have a lot of small details since I'll make each strand of hair a different color, for example (there are many pictures with hair in this book). I would highly recommend this book for the lovers of all things macabre in your life. It is helpful to be aware that most of the illustrations in this book are of decomposing/zombie-type people, there are weapons depicted (hatchets and machetes), etc. So, while I have a lot of fun coloring in this, it may be less appropriate for a younger children. There's nothing sexual or anything like that, and thematically it isn't very violent...mostly just images of bodies, not them being killed. Probably appropriate for people aged 12+, but that's very subjective. Enjoy!

Bought this for my wife while she recovers from surgery. She absolutely loved it, it's provided hours and hours of entertainment during the recovery rest period.

If you tend to lean toward the darker side of things when it comes to entertaining yourself, be it movies or music or dancing naked around a bonfire at 3AM while chanting voodoo incantations, this coloring book will keep you occupied for quite a while! Alan Robert filled this book with all sorts of eerie, creepy, gory and fun pages to wear out your favorite crayons, pencils, markers, or whatever it is you prefer to color with. The pages are heavy enough to hold many mediums nicely without bleeding through (no pun intended. Well, maybe a little). So unless you plan on using an industrial paint sprayer filled with goop from your neighborhood sludge pit, you should be good to go! All that said, whether you're a lover of all things horror, or just like to dabble in the darkness every now and then, getting yourself a copy of this book will make your life that much more enjoyable! Or get two copies, just in case you fill the first one up during the inevitable coloring binge you'll have the second you open it up! I know I did!

O livro é muito bom e uma delícia para pintar, desafia a criatividade e é viciante. Cuidado ao pintar, pois tem que ter bastante tempo ou repartir o tempo de pintura. Os desenhos são complexos e contam histórias o que é muito interessante.

A lot of fine detail if you like that in colouring books. Probably best for pencil and gel pen. Nice art

Je n'arrivais pas à me décider sur lequel prendre, alors j'ai pris la trilogie, et bien c'est sans regret! Super qualité de papier, dessins originaux, beaux, et avec différents niveaux de difficulté. Tout est travaillé, couvre-livre, couverture du livre, dessins. Je recommande sincèrement ce produit à tous ceux qui veulent colorier dans un thème plus dark. Au vu de la qualité et du contenu, il vaut largement son prix. Très contente de cet achat! auteur que je vais suivre :-) Recommandation +++
